Emergency and Disaster Response Honor
ADRA
Requirements
- Explain the types of damage most likely to occur to homes, individuals and communities in the face of the main types of emergencies and disasters and indicate in which part of the world they occur most frequently:
- Cyclones (hurricanes and typhoons)
- Tornadoes
- Floods
- Earthquakes
- Tsunamis
- Fires
- Wars/conflicts or civil wars
Answer: 1) Cyclones (hurricanes and typhoons): common in the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and Southeast Asia; they tear off roofs, knock down trees and poles and cause flooding from intense rain and storm surge, leaving communities without power and isolated. 2) Tornadoes: more frequent in the central region of the USA ("Tornado Alley"); rotating winds destroy entire houses in seconds, hurl vehicles and debris and injure or kill those who do not take shelter. 3) Floods: occur a lot in Brazil, in Asia (Bangladesh, India) and in riverside areas; they cause the loss of furniture and homes, water contamination, diseases (leptospirosis, diarrhea) and homelessness. 4) Earthquakes: frequent in Japan, Chile, Indonesia and throughout the Pacific "Ring of Fire"; they knock down buildings and bridges, bury people and rupture water, gas and power networks. 5) Tsunamis: strike the Pacific and Indian Ocean coasts (Indonesia, Japan); giant waves invade the coast, destroy coastal constructions, drown people and devastate ports and villages. 6) Fires: forest fires common in Australia, California and the Mediterranean, and urban fires worldwide; they cause deaths from burns and smoke, the total destruction of homes and forest, and the mass flight of the population. 7) Wars/conflicts or civil wars: present in the Middle East, parts of Africa and Eastern Europe; they generate deaths, the destruction of cities and infrastructure, hunger, the exodus of refugees and the collapse of basic services. — The Pacific Ring of Fire concentrates 90% of the world's earthquakes; cyclones form over warm oceans above 26°C — the Brazilian northeast rarely suffers from them because it is outside that range; Tornado Alley (Texas to South Dakota) generates 1,200 tornadoes per year according to NOAA, being the largest corridor in the world.
- Briefly describe the types of services provided by ADRA or by other local emergency and disaster response agencies to the survivors of such events in your country.
Answer: ADRA Brazil offers: the distribution of food baskets and potable water; the delivery of hygiene kits and blankets; temporary shelters for the homeless; psychosocial and spiritual support; the reconstruction of homes and schools; and support for the economic recovery of affected families. It works in partnership with the government, Civil Defense and the Red Cross. — ADRA is the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, founded in 1956 with a presence in more than 130 countries; in Brazil it is a recognized partner of Civil Defense in disasters such as the floods of Rio Grande do Sul (2024) and Petrópolis (2022); it receives donations via PIX and maintains an active national volunteer base among Brazilian Adventists.
- Read a newspaper or ADRA news about recent emergencies and disasters and discuss what are some important things to keep in mind when responding to such a situation.
Answer: These principles follow the Sphere Handbook (an international standard since 1997, 2018 revision) and the Red Cross Code of Conduct; the peak of donations after a disaster is in the first 5 days and then drops — communities need support for months in the recovery phase, according to official UN OCHA data reported.
- Explain what each letter of the ADRA acronym means and describe its role in emergency and disaster response.
Answer: ADRA = Adventist Development and Relief Agency. It works by responding to disasters with emergency relief (food, water, shelter, kits), psychosocial support and long-term reconstruction, in more than 130 countries, maintaining the dignity of the people it serves. — Founded in 1956 as SAWS (Seventh-day Adventist Welfare Service) and renamed in 1983 to ADRA; it operates independently of the church in social projects; it has been a member of the UN's Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) since 1997, being one of the main Adventist humanitarian organizations recognized worldwide.
- Describe at least one of these emergency and disaster response organizations and how it can work with ADRA during such situations.
- Red Cross/International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
- Adventist Solidarity Action (ASA)
- United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – UNHCR
- World Food Programme (WFP)
- Explain the role of the government in the event of an emergency or disaster and identify the key government agency in your country that manages the response in such situations.
Answer: The Brazilian government coordinates the response, declares a state of calamity, releases resources, mobilizes the Armed Forces and public agencies, and organizes relief/shelters. The key agency is Civil Defense (state and municipal) under the National Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense (SEDEC) of the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development. — SEDEC was created by Law 12,608/2012 (National Policy for Civil Protection and Defense); each municipality has a COMDEC (Municipal Coordination); the integrated SINPDEC system activates the Armed Forces and federal agencies when the disaster exceeds local capacity — a recent case: the floods of Rio Grande do Sul in May 2024.
- Find in the Bible a text that can be used to comfort and encourage an individual of your age and of the same sex, who has experienced the total loss of their home, and tell them why you chose that text.
Answer: Psalm 46:1 — "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" — I chose it because it assures us that even when we lose physical shelter God remains a spiritual and practical refuge, offering peace in the midst of life's storm and giving courage to rebuild what was lost. — Psalm 46 was written by the sons of Korah after God delivered Jerusalem from the Assyrian invasion; Luther used it as inspiration for the hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" in 1529; it is a recurring text in Adventist grief pastoral care, cited by Ellen White in "Steps to Christ" (ch. 12) — "we may trust the promises of our heavenly Father".
