Jungle Leadership Honor

Recreational Activities

Requirements

  1. Have the following honors:
    • Hiking
    • Map and compass
    • Camping IV
    • First aid - intermediate
    • Campfires and outdoor cooking
    • Basic rescue
  2. Describe which health, safety, and code-of-conduct principles should be used during an activity in a wilderness environment. Put these principles into practice in an activity (camp, hike, etc.) with a group of young people or Pathfinders.

Answer: Health: stay hydrated, eat well, protect yourself from the sun and insects, take care of your feet and hygiene. Safety: walk in a group, know the route, carry first aid, respect limits and time, and avoid risk areas. Conduct: respect and preserve nature ('leave no trace'), do not make excessive noise, do not remove or kill anything, and take care of one another. — Health, safety, and respect for nature are the foundation of any wilderness activity — they protect the group and creation.

  3. Know at least three methods of signaling when in danger.

Answer: Three methods: (1) sound — a whistle (3 blasts) or shouts in a series of three; (2) fire — a campfire and smoke (three fires or plenty of smoke during the day); (3) reflection/light — a mirror reflecting the sun or a flashlight at night. Also large signs on the ground (SOS) and colorful clothing. The number THREE is the international distress signal. — Whistle, fire/smoke, and light reflection — always in threes, the universal distress signal — to be found.

  4. Help in the planning and execution of a simulation, in the midst of forests or tropical jungles, of the following:
    • rescue of an injured person
    • rescue of a lost person
    • Lead a group in locating and rescuing a person who is lost and injured, using the skill acquired in requirement 5.
  5. Demonstrate the skills necessary for jungle leadership, in one of the following regions:
    • Tropical
    • Desert
    • Marshy
    • Mountainous
    • Temperate forest
    • Arctic
  6. What is the difference between camping in the jungle and camping in an open field? What special care should be taken regarding the preservation of nature? Write a report on the practical activity of this requirement.

Answer: 1) Difference between camping in the jungle and in the open field: in the JUNGLE/forest there is dense vegetation, shade, humidity, more animals and insects and less visibility — it requires care in choosing the site (away from animals, dead branches and flood-prone areas), with water and with orientation. In the OPEN FIELD there is more sun, wind and exposure, requiring protection from the sun and wind. 2) Special care with the preservation of nature: do not cut down living trees, control the fire well, leave no trash and preserve the fauna and flora ('leave no trace'). 3) Write a report on the practical activity carried out. — The jungle is humid and enclosed (be careful with the site and the animals); the field is exposed (sun and wind) — and always preserve nature.

  7. At a jungle camp, identify, prepare, and eat ten varieties of wild plants found in the vicinity of the camp.
  8. Write a report based on the life of two of the figures below, highlighting some leadership qualities manifested in their lives:
    • Moses
    • David
    • Elijah
    • Joshua
    • John the Baptist

Answer: Report on leadership qualities (choose two of the characters; all are listed below for reference): 1) Moses: humility, patience and courage to confront Pharaoh, as well as perseverance in guiding the people for 40 years in the wilderness, always dependent on God and willing to intercede for the people. 2) David: courage (he faced Goliath trusting in God), faith, care for those he led, the ability to unite and inspire people and the humility to acknowledge and repent of his mistakes. 3) Elijah: courage to face the prophets of Baal and King Ahab alone, firmness in defending the truth, powerful faith in prayer and total dependence on God even in moments of discouragement. 4) Joshua: courage and firmness ('be strong and courageous'), faithful obedience to God and the ability to lead the people with determination until the conquest of the Promised Land. 5) John the Baptist: humility ('he must increase, but I must decrease'), courage to speak the truth even before the powerful, faithfulness to his mission and a simple life consistent with what he preached. — Moses, David, Joshua and John the Baptist show biblical leadership: courage, humility, faith and dependence on God.

  9. Lead a group on a weekend camp in the midst of the forest (jungle), applying the principles and skills learned in this honor.
