Jungle Leadership Honor - advanced

Recreational Activities

Requirements

  1. Have the Jungle Leadership Honor.
  2. Have the following Honors:
    • Edible wild plants
    • Wildlife
    • Outdoor leadership
  3. During a campout in the woods, demonstrate how to camouflage yourself and track a trail left by your instructor.
  4. Before starting a jungle expedition, what physical and mental preparations are necessary? Put together a program for the preparation period. Make a report of how you prepared each day containing the preparation period, types of exercises, and time spent.

Answer: Physical: conditioning (hikes, endurance and strength), good nutrition, hydration, sleep, vaccinations and a health check. Mental: study the environment and the route, know the risks, train survival skills, stay calm and confident, and prepare yourself spiritually (prayer and dependence on God). Putting together a preparation program and recording the progress each day is the task. — A jungle expedition requires a trained body and a prepared mind — conditioning, knowledge of the terrain and trust in God.

  5. Demonstrate the skills necessary for jungle leadership in two of the following regions - the regions chosen must be different from the ones you selected in the Jungle Leadership Honor.
    • Tropical
    • Desert
    • Marshy
    • Mountainous
    • Temperate forest
    • Arctic
  6. Make a drawing or model of two types of traps or snares. Build them at full size, demonstrating how they work.
  7. List the preparations that must be made to undertake a campout in each of the following places, considering equipment, clothing, food, etc.:
    • In mountains
    • In water
    • Glacial
    • In snow

Answer: 1) In the mountains: bring warm clothing for the cold and wind, sturdy high-top footwear for the uneven terrain, and clothing in layers. Pay attention to the altitude (thin air) and the rapidly changing weather; calorie-dense and easy-to-carry food (bars, nuts) and enough water. 2) On the water (rivers and lakes): use a life jacket and follow safety rules against drowning, protect your body and equipment from moisture (waterproof bags), insect repellent, and watch out for floods and currents; dry, well-sealed food. 3) Glacial: thermal clothing for extreme cold, gloves, a hat, and protective goggles against the glare of snow on ice, a shelter well insulated from the frozen ground, and equipment suited to ice (crampons, ice axes). Very calorie-dense food and hot drinks; beware of frostbite. 4) In the snow: clothing in several waterproof, heat-retaining layers, boots suited to snow, a heated shelter, and constant attention to hypothermia. Energy-rich foods and hot liquids; protect the extremities (hands, feet, ears). In all environments, equipment, clothing and food must be suited to the climate and terrain. — Each environment (mountain, water, ice, snow) requires its own equipment, clothing and food — the right preparation is a matter of survival.

  8. Write an essay citing the principles for developing faith in divine leadership, similar to what the psalmist demonstrated in Psalm 91.
  9. Know what measures must be taken for survival in the jungle.

Answer: Survival priorities: stay calm; secure shelter (protection from the weather); fire (warmth, cooking, keeping animals away, signaling); drinking water (collect and purify); food (safe plants); orientation (do not wander aimlessly); and signaling for rescue. The 'rule of 3' applies: about 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter in extreme cold, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food — hence the order of priorities. — Surviving means prioritizing: shelter, fire, water and signaling — the 'rule of 3' shows what to take care of first.

  10. Teach one of the Honors mentioned in item 1 of the Jungle Leadership Honor.
  11. Build a shelter from natural but non-living material (for example, a hut made of dry branches) and spend at least one overnight in it.
  12. Plan and take part in at least two jungle campouts, with at least 2 overnights each, applying the principles and skills learned in this Honor.
