Recreational Activities
Requirements
- Have two of the following honors:
- Camping IV;
- Campfires and outdoor cooking;
- Map and compass;
- Pioneering;
- Pioneering projects;
- First aid - basic.
- Through the study of the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy, learn how outdoor activities influenced the following biblical characters:
- Moses;
- David;
- Elijah;
- John the Baptist;
- Jesus.
- Teach a group of Pathfinders how to preserve and care for nature, addressing the following topics:
- Camp safety;
- Proper disposal of waste;
- Fire safety;
- Safety in the use of water sources;
- Sanitation;
- Rules of conduct.
- Know at least 10 qualities of a good Pathfinder leader.
Answer: Ten qualities: being an example (Christian character and good witness), responsible, organized, patient, communicative, fair and impartial, dedicated, knowing how to work as a team, knowing how to listen, being courageous and balanced, loving and caring for those one leads and having a spirit of service. A good leader inspires by example, not just by giving orders. — A good leader leads by example: character, service, patience and care for those one leads are worth more than giving orders.
- Know what to do to overcome fear when lost. Know at least four ways to signal calls for help if you are lost.
Answer: When you get lost: stay CALM, stop (do not wander aimlessly), take shelter, conserve energy and stay in a visible place (the STOP motto: Stop, Think, Observe, Plan). Four ways to signal for help: a whistle (3 blasts), a campfire/smoke, a mirror reflecting the sun, and large visual signs on the ground (SOS with rocks/branches) or colorful clothing. The number three is the distress signal. — Lost? Stop and stay calm — and signal with a whistle, fire/smoke, a mirror or a large SOS to be found.
- Describe at least four secular activities and four activities specific to the Sabbath, to be used outdoors, including on a rainy day.
Answer: • Secular outdoor activities: hikes/trails, games and competitions, sports, nature observation. On a rainy day: board games and group dynamics under shelter, handicrafts, workshops. • Sabbath activities (spiritual): outdoor worship, study of nature as God's work, a meditation walk, hymns and Bible stories. On a rainy day: a Bible class, praise and dramatizations under the tent. — There are activities for every outdoor moment — recreational on ordinary days and spiritual on Sabbath, with a plan B for rain.
- Complete the following outdoors:
- Plan, organize, and teach one of the following honors to a group of Pathfinders: Camping I, Camping II, Camping III, Camping IV, Camperaft, or Campfires and outdoor cooking;
- Know where the nearest hospital is located;
- Know where the nearest police station/precinct is located, or the headquarters of rangers in a park being visited.
