Pottery Honor

Arts & Crafts

Requirements

  1. Write or explain orally the different types and uses of pottery art and the materials used in its making.

Answer: Pottery art (ceramics) has several types and uses: utilitarian ware (plates, pots, jugs, and containers for cooking and storing); decorative ware (vases, sculptures, tiles, and art pieces); sanitary ware, roof tiles, and bricks (construction); and fine porcelain (domestic and artistic use). The main materials are clay (common clay, earthenware, stoneware, and kaolin, the latter for porcelain), water (which provides plasticity), and glazes and pigments for decoration; the potter's wheel, molds, and the kiln for firing are also used. — Knowing the types of pottery and their materials is the starting point for safely creating useful and beautiful pieces.

  2. What is the purpose of a glaze? Describe the specific hazards to be avoided.

Answer: The glaze covers the piece with a glassy layer after firing, making it waterproof (it does not absorb liquids), more resistant, hygienic, and easy to clean, as well as decorating it with color and shine. Hazards to avoid: do not use glazes containing lead or toxic metals on pieces intended for food; protect yourself (with a mask) from silica dust and pigment dust, which are harmful to the lungs; and be careful with the high temperatures and kiln gases during firing. — Glazing makes pottery safe to use, but it requires care with toxic materials and with firing.

  3. Design and draw 2 clay pieces, one of which must be decorated.
  4. Make 3 of the following objects. Each project must be decorated with, for example, painting, glaze, or carving.
    • A jug or vase.
    • A box.
    • Another similar object.
    • Design and make four different tiles.
    • A tray or plate.
    • On the potter's wheel, make a simple vase.
