Requirements

  1. Know how to execute the following stitches and mention what their abbreviations are:
    • Double crochet
    • Treble crochet
    • Chain stitch
    • Single crochet
    • Half double crochet
    • Slip stitch

Answer: Chain stitch - corr or ch. Slip stitch - bxss or sl. Single crochet - pb or sc. Half double crochet - m.pt or hdc. Double crochet - pa or dc. Treble crochet - padb or tr. — Stitches range from the lowest (chain) to the tallest (treble crochet). American crochet uses abbreviations in English (ch, sc, hdc, dc, tr); Brazil uses them in Portuguese (corr, pb, mp, pa). Be careful when following a foreign pattern: the row count varies. Practicing all of them is the basis of any advanced project.

  2. List the materials needed to make a crochet piece, mentioning which types of yarn are most suitable for each type of work.

Answer: Materials needed: crochet hooks in various sizes (from fine ones, 0.6-1.75mm for thread, to thick ones, 2-10mm for yarn and twine), the chosen threads/yarns, scissors, a measuring tape, a tapestry needle (for weaving in ends), stitch markers and, optionally, a thread counter and a blocker. Threads most suitable by type of work: mercerized thread (fine cotton) for doilies, table runners and delicate pieces; cotton twine for rugs, bags and baskets; yarn/wool for garments (beanies, scarves, sweaters); acrylic yarn or fine cotton for amigurumi; soft hypoallergenic yarn for baby items. — A 2-3mm hook for fine thread, 4-5mm standard, 6-10mm for thick yarn. Warm wool is for winter. Fashion yarn (acrylic) is versatile. Mercerized thread shines and lasts. Natural twine is rustic. Combining the wrong yarn + hook gives a piece without drape. Always test the gauge before starting.

  3. Make a 10X10 cm square using one of the stitches indicated in requirement 1.

Answer: Make a 10x10cm square in a single stitch (e.g.: single crochet). Start with a base chain of approximately 25-30 stitches. Work in straight rows until reaching 10cm in height. — 10x10cm is the standard crochet swatch. It allows you to calculate stitches per cm and check tension. Different stitches result in different numbers of rows. Single crochet is denser; double crochet grows faster. Blocking (wetting and shaping) helps keep the square rectangular.

  4. Know how to care for items made of wool, nylon, acrylic and cotton.

Answer: Wool: hand wash in cold water with neutral soap, dry flat. Nylon: machine, cold water, delicate cycle. Acrylic: machine, warm water, any cycle. Cotton: machine, hot water. — Wool shrinks and felts with heat (called fulling). Nylon cannot go to high temperatures. Acrylic is the most resistant. Cotton withstands everything but can shrink 5-10% on the first wash. Always dry knitted pieces flat to avoid deformation. Blocking is a technique for shaping a damp piece.

  5. Know how to make a crochet square and show something you have made using it, for example, a cap, scarf, or cushion cover.

Answer: Make a standard square (classic granny square) and show an item produced with several squares joined together: a cushion cover (4-6 squares), a rug (16-25 squares) or a bedspread (50+ squares). — The granny square is iconic in crochet — it starts at the center and grows in a square spiral. It combines colors easily. A cushion uses 4 squares on each side. Rugs use a grid. Crocheting the squares is vintage. Joining can be by sewing or by crocheting in single crochet. The presentation includes both stages.

  6. Present a sample of an edging made in thread.

Answer: Make a decorative edging (border) in mercerized thread using double crochet, fan stitch, picot, or a points pattern. Minimum length of 20-30cm for the presentation. — Crochet edgings are traditional in the Brazilian table setting (cloths with points). 100% mercerized cotton thread (Anchor, Cléa) is the standard. Picots are decorative little bobbles. Fans are multiple stitches in the same spot, forming an arc. Points can be pointed, rounded, or heart-shaped.

  7. Make, in wool yarn, one of the following items: cap, scarf, vest or a pair of slippers.

Answer: Choose 1 item and make it in wool. A scarf is the simplest (straight rows, 20cm wide x 150cm long). A beanie uses circular increases. A vest has a garment structure. — 50% acrylic wool is versatile and economical. 100% pure wool is more expensive but durable. A scarf is an ideal project for beginners (4-8h). A beanie requires the technique of closing it off at the top. Vests are complex. Slippers can use a leather or rubber sole. The total time varies a lot by individual skill.

  8. Make one of the following items:
    • Trim for a towel or dish cloth with a fruit motif
    • Hair flower
    • Keychain

Answer: Choose 1 item: a small edging (fruits in double crochet + finishing), a hair flower (with a clip), or a keychain (a small amigurumi). Use the thread appropriate to the item: mercerized for the edging, fine colored yarn for the flower, acrylic yarn for the keychain. — The classic Brazilian edging with fruits (strawberries, watermelon) decorates dish towels. Flowers are popular in children's accessories. Amigurumi keychains have become a worldwide trend. Each item has a free pattern on Pinterest, YouTube, or in magazines. Start with the simplest one (a small keychain) if you are a beginner.
