Leatherwork - advanced Honor

Arts & Crafts

Requirements

  1. Have the Leatherwork honor.

— Basic Leatherwork covers the fundamentals: identifying types (cow, sheep, goat), tools, cutting, simple stitching, and finishing. The Advanced level goes further: saddles, carving/embossing, professional lacing, complex models (bags, folders). Without mastery of the basics, the advanced level becomes frustrating. Leather is an expensive material — costly mistakes for those who have not mastered the fundamentals first.

  2. Demonstrate the ability to make holes, attach fasteners, sew a saddle, and make 2 types of lacing.

  3. Make a sheath for a hatchet, knife, or machete.

— A sheath protects the blade (and the user). Thick vegetable-tanned leather (3-4 mm) is ideal. Shaping with wet leather gives a perfect fit to the exact shape of the blade. A loop attaches it to the belt. Reinforcement with rivets at the mouth prevents tearing. Finishing with animal oil or carnauba wax protects it from moisture. A well-made sheath lasts decades and is a piece of pride for the club.

  4. Make and carve a belt, creating an appropriate tool for this activity.

— Carving leather is an advanced technique — moist leather becomes malleable and accepts engraving. The swivel knife is the main tool: a rotating blade that follows the design. Bevelers (stamps) imprint depth. These tools can be made by hand — a wooden handle + a ground blade. Aniline dye penetrates the leather without covering the relief. A carved belt becomes a personalized, original work of art.

  5. Draw, cut the leather, punch holes, and lace one of the following models:
    • Purse
    • Bag
    • Folder
    • Object of your choice

Answer: Escolha modelo (ex: bolsa). — Lacing is a decorative alternative to traditional stitching. Types: whipstitch (covers the edge), cross stitch (in an X), Spanish stitch (more elaborate). Lacing gives a classic rustic look. A thin leather strip (lacing) or a thick cotton cord are the options. A laced bag becomes a unique piece, perfect for a special gift and long-lasting.

  6. Present at least 6 leather objects made by you.

Answer: You organize a portfolio with 6+ of your own objects: a sheath, a carved belt, a laced bag, a bracelet, a keychain, a wallet, or a Bible cover. For each object: explain the type of leather used, the techniques applied, the time taken, and the difficulties overcome. Present it in a practical session to the examiner, letting them examine each piece up close, properly, always, during the presentation. — This is the final requirement that validates practical mastery. 6 diverse objects show technical breadth. Each piece documents a skill: sheath (shaping), belt (carving), bag (lacing), wallet (complex assembly), bracelet (small scale), Bible cover (special Adventist). A physical portfolio (real pieces) or a photo album (if they are far away). Present it with passion for your own handcrafted work.
