2. What is lignin? Why is it harmful?

   Answer: Lignin is a natural organic substance present in wood that gives rigidity to the fibers. Why it is harmful in scrapbooking: 1) lignin is unstable and, when exposed to light and air, oxidizes and releases acids; 2) these acids yellow and darken the paper over time; 3) they make the paper brittle (fragile, crumbling); 4) they migrate to photos in contact, staining and discoloring them. Newspaper and common cardboard have a lot of lignin. For this reason, in a scrapbook always use 'lignin-free' and 'acid-free' paper (without lignin and without acid) to preserve photos and pages for decades. — Lignina é polímero das paredes celulares vegetais. 3. What type of plastic is safe to be used in scrapbooks?

   Answer: Safe plastics (acid-free and chemically stable): polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and mylar/polyester (PET). They are inert and do not release gases or plasticizers that attack the photos. Look on the label for the expressions 'archival safe', 'photo safe', or 'acid-free / PVC-free'. Sleeves, covers, pouches, and protective refills should be made of these materials to ensure the album lasts 50+ years without damaging the photos. — Archival plastics are the Library of Congress standard. Polypropylene is the most common and cheapest — used in folders and sleeves. Mylar is more expensive but perfect for precious photos. PET is used in hard covers. These 3 types pass accelerated aging tests without releasing aggressive substances. Buying from a specialized supplier (Hobby Lobby, Michaels) ensures certified quality.

4. What type of plastic should not be used and why not?

   Answer: PVC (polyvinyl chloride / vinyl) should NOT be used. Why: over time PVC releases plasticizers (phthalates) and acidic chlorine gases that yellow, discolor, and can even stick to/melt the photos on contact; the chlorine also attacks pen inks and the paper itself, leaving it brittle. PVC folders, sleeves, and covers ruin the album. 5. How do you correct a written error in the final work?

   Answer: To correct a written mistake in the final work, integrate the correction into the design instead of crossing it out: 1) cover the mistake with a decorative sticker, label, washi tape, a small photo, or a cut-out piece of paper matching the theme; 2) for a large mistake, redo the tag/label or the entire page. Never use white correction fluid (it smudges and remains visible) or cross it out with a pen. The correction should be invisible or deliberately decorated, keeping the album beautiful. — A mistake in a scrapbook is part of the process. Creative solution: turn the mistake into a design 'feature'. Themed stickers cover wrong words. Washi tape (Japanese decorative tape) is versatile. Redoing the entire page is a last resort. White correction pen is forbidden (it turns yellow, it stains). Crossing out with a pen is amateurish. Learning from mistakes improves future skill, always, throughout the study.
