Almost every Pathfinder looks at a veteran's sash full of honors and stops at one of them: the Astronomy patch. It is one of the most beloved in the club, and one of the most rewarding, because the final test is not a sheet of paper, it is the real sky on a night of camping.

But that is where the confusion begins. Many people memorize blog answers, arrive at camp and cannot point out the Southern Cross. Others think it is enough to answer the questionnaire and that's it. And there are those who study from an old handbook that still counts Pluto as a planet.

This guide joins the two halves that no one joins: what the honor officially requires and how to fulfill each part in practice. It does not hand over the answers, it hands over the path. The ages, requirements and rules come from the Pathfinder Honors Handbook and the Club Administrative Manual (2020 edition, SAD). Data verified on 07/22/2026 in the official sources listed at the end.

What does the Astronomy Honor cover?

Astronomy is one of the honors in the Nature Study area, according to the Pathfinder Honors Handbook. That is why its patch falls into the color group of the nature honors on your sash, not the arts-and-crafts group nor the missionary-activities one.

The basic version has ten requirements, and they divide into two very different blocks. One is knowledge: you need to explain what causes an eclipse, what a shooting star is, what the speed of light is, which celestial body is closest to the Earth and what governs the tides. Then come the drawings: a diagram of the positions and movements of the Earth, the Sun and the Moon (showing how eclipses happen) and a diagram of the solar system with the planets in the correct order from the Sun.

The other block is observation, and it is what makes this honor special. You have to identify fixed stars and explain the difference between them and the planets; understand what a constellation is, name and point out six of them in the sky and say which are visible all year; draw the layout of the Southern Cross, of Orion and of Scorpius; and observe the Milky Way with the naked eye. Topics such as the morning star and the evening star (the two names of the planet Venus), zenith and nadir, and what causes the aurora borealis also come up.

Notice the balance: half is solved at a meeting table; the other half is only solved under a dark sky. No club delivers this honor well done without a night outing.

There is also Astronomy — Advanced, with seventeen requirements and which requires, right in item 1, having completed the basic one. We talk about it at the end.

How does earning an honor work in practice?

Here it is worth separating three layers, because they tend to get mixed up in the head of someone just starting.

The written official rule. An honor is a series of studies on a subject; once all the proposed requirements are met, the Pathfinder receives the patch to attach to the sash, grouped by area and color, as the official Pathfinders site describes. The record of what you earned is official in the SGC, the SAD's Club Management System; that is where the honor is logged in your history. No other tool replaces this, including Desbravai, which helps the club track progress day to day.

The practice that varies by club. The one who teaches and evaluates each requirement is the honor instructor, who can be a counselor, an associate director or a guest who masters the subject. How the club organizes this varies a lot: some open Astronomy as a quarter-long project, with an observation night at the end; some tie everything into a themed camp. No format is wrong; the one who decides the schedule is the club's leadership.

The principle behind it. The honor does not exist for you to collect colored rectangles. The goal, in the words of the official material itself, is to give the Pathfinder a survey of their aptitudes and an entry point into a subject, with requirements that are at once theoretical, practical and spiritual. An honor you "passed" by copying answers did not fulfill that goal; it only took up space on the sash.

An honest note: honor requirements are updated from time to time by the SAD. The most widespread Honors Handbook is an old compilation, excellent for understanding the content of each item, but before investing in the honor confirm with your leadership whether the wording of any requirement has changed.

Sky, Moon and planets: what to study before looking up

The theory block is where most people get stuck, not because it is hard, but because it is memorized instead of understood. Study with a question in mind: can I explain this to a ten-year-old without reading? If not, you memorized, you did not learn.

Eclipses. It is pure geometry of three balls in a row. In a solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun and blocks the light during the day; in a lunar eclipse, the Earth sits between the Sun and the Moon and casts a shadow over it, at night. If you can set this up with a flashlight and two pieces of fruit on the kitchen table, the diagram requirement comes out on its own.

The Moon and the tides. The celestial body closest to the Earth is the Moon, our natural satellite, and it is its pull (with help from the Sun) that governs the tides: high tide follows the Moon.

Planet vs. star. This is the distinction the honor demands most, and the most useful in the real sky: a star has its own light and twinkles (that flickering); a planet has no light of its own, it only reflects the Sun's, and it shines with a steady light. At camp, it is the rule of thumb for knowing whether that bright point is Jupiter or a star.

The solar system in order. The requirement asks for the diagram with the planets in sequence from the Sun. Here is the catch: the old handbook ends the list at Pluto, but that is outdated; we talk about it in the mistakes section. Learn the order of the eight planets and you nail the requirement without embarrassment.

Venus, the star that is not a star. Venus appears in the requirement as the "morning star" and the "evening star": it earns both names because, depending on the season, it is the first point to appear at dusk or the last to fade at dawn. It is also the brightest object in the sky after the Moon, easy to show the instructor on any night.

How to find the Southern Cross, Orion and Scorpius?

Three constellations have a first and last name in the honor: the requirement asks for the drawing of the layout of the Southern Cross, of Orion and of Scorpius. Add this to the item that requires naming and pointing out six constellations and you understand why the practical part is the heart of the honor.

Southern Cross. It is the guiding star for those who live in the southern hemisphere. It is five stars in the shape of a cross, and from most of Brazil it is visible all year. The classic trick: extend the longer arm of the cross about four and a half times downward; you arrive near the south point of the horizon. Learning this also solves, as a bonus, the Orienteering honor.

Orion. The easiest to recognize in the whole sky. Look for the Three Marys, three aligned and equally bright stars; they form Orion's belt. Around them, the four stars of the shoulders and feet close off the hunter's figure. In Brazil, Orion appears well in summer (December to March) and disappears in winter.

Scorpius. A true scorpion drawn in the sky, with the curved tail and the stinger. Its heart is Antares, a distinctly reddish star; you can recognize it by its color. It is a winter constellation in the southern hemisphere (June to August), when it stands high and easy.

A tip that saves frustration: choose the season for the practical part with these three in mind. If the camp is in July, Scorpius is at its peak and Orion is gone; in January, it is the opposite. You cannot point out all three easily in the same month; arrange with the instructor to solve Orion on a summer outing and Scorpius on a winter one.

How to observe the sky at a camp?

Observing the Milky Way and the constellations is where the honor becomes a memory for a lifetime. But a good sky does not happen by chance. Five precautions make all the difference:

1. Flee the light. The Milky Way —that whitish band that crosses the sky— only appears far from city lights. Inside the city, forget it: the urban glow erases everything except the brightest stars. Countryside, a farm or the hills are the right setting.

2. Choose the new moon. The full moon is a spotlight that washes out the sky and erases the Milky Way. Schedule the observation for the week of the new moon, or for nights when the Moon sets early. That is the mistake that most ruins an astronomy outing: camping under a full moon.

3. Give your eyes time. Your vision takes 20 to 30 minutes to adapt to the dark. During that period, no looking at the phone; the white light of the screen resets everyone's adaptation. Anyone who needs light should use a red-light flashlight (or red cellophane over a regular flashlight): it lights the notebook without blinding the group.

4. Bring a sky map. A printed star chart or a planetarium app on the phone (used in red mode and at the start, before you turn off the screen) helps locate the constellations in the requirement. Point out the easy ones first —Southern Cross, Orion or Scorpius, depending on the season— and work your way out from them.

5. Match it to the requirement, not to luck. Before heading out, list what you need to point out and check whether everything is in the sky for that date and time. Astronomy is the only honor in which the "test content" depends on the calendar; planning is half the grade.

And make the most of the side the advanced handbook calls spiritual: there is a requirement that takes the Pathfinder to Job 9:9 and 38:31 and to Amos 5:8, where Orion and the Pleiades appear in the Bible. Looking up with a group of friends, in silence, tends to do more for a young person's faith than many talks.

What are the most common mistakes?

Most of the failures and frustrations come from four slips, and all of them can be avoided.

Studying from outdated material. The most copied handbook on the internet lists Pluto as the ninth planet. That is in the past: on August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined what a planet is and reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet. The solar system has eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Fulfill the diagram requirement with this correct information; if your instructor asks, explain the change: that counts in your favor, not against you.

Memorizing instead of observing. You can answer the entire questionnaire without ever having pointed out a constellation. But the honor has items that are only fulfilled in the sky, and a serious instructor asks you to show, not to recite. If the club "passed" the honor only on paper, you were left with the patch and without the knowledge.

Confusing a planet with a star in the sky. In the dark, everyone points at a bright dot and calls it a star. Remember the rule: if it twinkles, it is a star; if it shines steadily, it is a planet. Jupiter and Venus fool many people precisely because they shine steadily and brightly.

Scheduling the observation on the wrong night. We already said it, but it is the champion mistake: a full moon erases the Milky Way, and the constellation you want may simply not be in the sky that month. Astronomy does not forgive improvisation; check the Moon's phase and the season of the constellations before locking in the date.

And after the basic one? Astronomy — Advanced

If the honor sparked your curiosity —and it usually does—, the natural path is Astronomy — Advanced, with seventeen requirements. The first of them is simple to list and mandatory: having completed the Astronomy honor. Without the basic one, you don't start the advanced one.

The jump in depth is large. The advanced one gets into celestial coordinates —celestial sphere, celestial pole, celestial equator, right ascension, declination, ecliptic—, the vocabulary astronomers use to locate any object in the sky. It also asks you to explain why the stars seem to move over the course of the night (it is not them moving, it is the Earth rotating) and to define terms like comet, meteor, nebula and sunspot.

The first conversation about instruments appears: the difference between refracting telescopes (which concentrate light through lenses) and reflecting ones (which use a mirror), and what an equatorial mount is. There are requirements about the twelve constellations of the zodiac, about the equinoxes and their dates, about locating first-magnitude stars throughout the year and about the three brightest stars of Orion.

And there is the spiritual layer, stronger than in the basic one: the advanced one takes the Pathfinder to Job, to Amos and to a reflection on the sky drawn from the writings of Ellen White. In other words, the advanced version is not just "more astronomy": it is astronomy with a telescope, with a coordinate system and with the Bible open.

A good roadmap: finish the basic one on a night in the field and, when the constellation names come out without thinking, seek out the instructor for the advanced one. No one needs to rush; the sky will still be there.
