On the second Sunday of December, churches all over Brazil set aside time to give thanks for a book. Bible Day in Brazil has been on the country's official calendar since 2001 and, in 2026, it falls on December 13, right in the month when many Pathfinder Clubs wrap up the year with closing programs, get-togethers and plans for the year ahead.

This guide explains where the date comes from, what September has to do with it and how to turn that Sunday, or the month leading up to it, into a program your Pathfinders will remember.

When is Bible Day in Brazil in 2026?

Bible Day is celebrated in Brazil on the second Sunday of December. The rule was set by Law No. 10.335 of December 19, 2001, signed by President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Article 1 calls for the date to be celebrated "on the second Sunday of the month of December of each year, throughout the national territory" (our translation). In 2026, the second Sunday is December 13; in 2027, it will be December 12.

The law is short, with only two articles, and says nothing about a public holiday: Bible Day goes on the Brazilian calendar as a commemorative date.

For an Adventist club, the Sunday date calls for a small adjustment. If your club meets on Sundays, the program fits on the 13th itself; if you meet on Saturday afternoons, use the Saturday before, December 12. The Bible Society of Brazil (SBB) also notes that the date can be celebrated throughout the whole month leading up to it.

What is the origin of Bible Day and Bible Sunday?

According to the SBB, the date was created in 1549, in Britain, by Thomas Cranmer, who included it in King Edward VI's prayer book. The aim was for people to pray on behalf of the reading of the Bible.

The British website Christian Today describes what was in that book. For the second Sunday of Advent, the weeks of preparation for Christmas, Archbishop Cranmer wrote a prayer of thanks for the Scriptures, inspired by Romans 15:4, the verse that speaks of the "comfort of the Scriptures" (NKJV). For centuries, that Sunday was known as Bible Sunday in Anglican churches. Law No. 10.335 does not explain why it chose the second Sunday of December, and the two dates do not always line up: in 2026, the second Sunday of Advent falls on December 6, a week before Bible Day in Brazil.

Also according to the SBB, the celebration reached Brazil in 1850, with the first Protestant missionaries from Europe and the United States. The first public celebration took place in 1948, at the Ipiranga Monument in São Paulo, the same year the Bible Society of Brazil was founded. Thanks to the SBB's promotion, the celebration grew to include the week before the Sunday and, in December 2001, entered the country's official calendar through Law No. 10.335.

Is Bible Day in September or December?

In Brazil, under federal law, Bible Day is in December. September has a different celebration: according to Vatican News, the Catholic Church in Brazil has observed Bible Month since 1971, throughout September and up to the feast of Saint Jerome, the translator of the Bible into Latin, celebrated on September 30.

Outside Brazil, the calendar changes too. According to Christian Today, since around 1994 most British churches have moved their Bible Sunday to the fourth Sunday of October, partly because the date was getting lost in the rush before Christmas.

For a Pathfinder Club in Brazil, the safe reference is the one in the law. If your church prefers another date for the program, agree on it with the pastor before announcing it.

Why does Bible Day fit the Pathfinder Club?

The club already has the Bible at the center of its routine. Among the club's official ideals is the Pathfinder Pledge to the Bible, and the Classes call for real reading. The Friend class requirements page on the adventistas.org portal lists tasks such as taking part in the club's Bible Class, memorizing the 39 books of the Old Testament and being able to find any of them, and reading chapters of Genesis and Exodus.

So Bible Day can become a showcase for what your Pathfinders studied during the year: whoever memorized the order of the books shines in the race, and whoever follows the Pathfinder Bible Year finds December a good moment to count how much they have read and celebrate their consistency.

There is also an image every Pathfinder understands. Psalm 119:105 says: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (NKJV). Anyone who has walked a trail at night knows the value of a flashlight that lights up the next step, even without showing the whole road.

How do you run a Bible reading marathon with your club?

The SBB suggests two formats. In the first, the group chooses one book of the Bible and reads all of it during the program. In the second, readers are scheduled in shifts and the reading only ends when the whole Bible has been read. For a club, the first format is the most realistic; the second needs the whole church involved, with adults covering the long shifts.

The idea has biblical roots. In Nehemiah 8, the people gather in the open square in front of the Water Gate, and Ezra reads the Book of the Law "from morning until midday" (Nehemiah 8:3, NKJV). Verse 8 adds a precious detail: "they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading" (NKJV). A good marathon, then, combines reading and explanation.

In practice, choose a short book, such as Mark (16 chapters) or Jonah (4), divide the chapters among the Units and rehearse reading aloud. A Counselor gives a two-minute explanation after each block, and all readers use the same Bible version.

In many churches, "Bible marathon" also means a question-and-answer competition. You can do both: reading in the morning and, in the afternoon, a Bible quiz on the book you read.

Safety: nonstop reading that runs through the night only with written permission from parents or guardians, adults on every shift and a place set up for rest. For 10- to 15-year-olds, reading a whole book during the day is already a great achievement.

Bible Day activities: what can you do at church and in the club?

The SBB lists church services, car parades, reading marathons, Bible exhibitions and Scripture distribution among the ways to celebrate the date, and suggests that young people and children take action on social media and set challenges among friends. The table adapts these ideas to a club setting.

For the race, the guide to the 66 books of the Bible covers the reference side. For the workshop, the guide on how to mark your Bible explains which materials do not bleed through thin paper.

For the memory challenge, choose one short verse for the whole club. In the material for Bible Day on December 14, 2025, which the SBB's official page was still showing on October 6, 2026, the theme was "Bíblia, Igreja e Missão" (Bible, Church and Mission) and the featured text was Acts 12:24, which reads in the NKJV: "But the word of God grew and multiplied." Before printing posters, check whether the 2026 theme and verse have been published.

On social media, post photos of Pathfinders only with permission from their parents or guardians, without showing full name, school or address.

How can your club donate Bibles and New Testaments?

Scripture distribution is among the ways to celebrate the date listed by the SBB, which runs yearly campaigns so churches can buy New Testaments and hand them out in their communities. In 2022, the organization promoted the distribution of 1 million New Testaments through the Sementes da Paz (Seeds of Peace) campaign, and since 2023 it has launched a new campaign every year.

For the club, set a target number of copies with the club leadership, organize the fundraising with the church and families, without pressuring anyone, and choose early where to deliver them: a nursing home, a shelter or the church's neighborhood. For institutions, ask the management for permission before setting the date.

A handwritten note inside each copy, with a verse and the church's address, makes a difference: the person who receives it knows where to look for help when questions come up during the reading.

Warning: a Pathfinder never approaches strangers alone. Deliveries happen in groups, in uniform, with one responsible adult per Unit and a route agreed on beforehand with the families.

How do you fit Bible Day into the December calendar?

In many clubs, December is the month for closing programs, and the break starts soon after. That is why preparation pays off more if it starts in November, within the month the SBB suggests for the celebration. The timeline in this section shows one possible plan for 2026.

A tip for the Director: write down how many chapters were read and how many Bibles were handed out. Those numbers help with the year-end evaluation and are a starting point for Bible Day 2027 in Brazil, which falls on December 12.

If the club is already on break on the 13th, hold the program at the last meeting before the break and suggest that families read a chapter together on Sunday.
