A storm almost never arrives out of nowhere. It announces itself with a distant flash, a muffled rumble, a wind that shifts direction. The problem is that a lot of people ignore those first signs and only run once the rain is already heavy. By then it is too late: many of the most dangerous strikes fall before the rain peaks and after it seems to have passed.
At camp, you are responsible for a group, and a group needs time to move. Gathering the Unit cannot wait for the first drops. This guide lays out the protocol weather services recommend, adapted to the routine of the Club: how to measure the distance of the lightning, where you must never shelter, what to do inside and outside the tent, and how to help someone who has been struck.
Nothing here replaces the good judgment of the Director or proper first-aid training. It is information so you can act faster and more calmly when the sky closes in.
The 30/30 rule: count the seconds
The flash of lightning reaches your eyes almost instantly, but the sound of thunder travels slowly, at about 340 meters per second. That difference is your ruler. As soon as you see the flash, start counting out loud: one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three. Every three seconds of counting equals, roughly, one kilometer of distance between you and the discharge.
The first half of the rule is your trigger to act. When the interval between the flash and the thunder drops to 30 seconds or less, the storm is about 10 kilometers away, within the range where the next bolt could already reach your campsite. At that point there is nothing left to debate: you stop the activity, whether it is a campfire, a game, or an outdoor service, and take everyone to a safe shelter.
The second half is the one most people forget. After the last thunder sounds, wait a full 30 minutes before returning to the open field. The sky may be clearing, the sun may even come back out, and yet a cell moving away still throws lightning behind it. Note the time on your watch at each thunderclap and restart the count if you hear another. Only when the 30 minutes pass in silence does the Unit resume its activities.
Where you must never stay
Lightning seeks the easiest path to the ground, and that usually runs through tall, isolated objects. The lone tree in the middle of an open field, so tempting as a way to escape the rain, is one of the worst places at camp. If it is struck, the current spreads across the ground around it and knocks down everyone standing underneath. Stay away from isolated trees and from the tallest trees in a grove.
Height means danger. Avoid hilltops, ridges, open fields, and any spot where you are the tallest thing around. Water also conducts very well: get out of rivers, lakes, ponds, and away from the edge of the camp pool as soon as the storm approaches. Anyone swimming or fishing needs to leave first. Reinforce this when planning water activities, a subject we cover in water safety.
Metal deserves special attention. Barbed-wire fences can carry the current of a bolt for hundreds of meters and deliver it far from the point of impact. Keep clear of fences, gates, wire mesh, and pipes. At camp, that includes the entrance archway, the flagpole, and the metal structures of the taller pioneering builds. Put down hoes, machetes, and metal-shafted umbrellas. If your backpack has an aluminum frame, set it on the ground a few steps away from you.
No shelter nearby: what to do
Here is the truth meteorologists keep repeating: there is no fully safe place outdoors during an electrical storm. No body position protects you from a direct strike. That is why goal number one is always to reach a real shelter, a fully enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle with the windows closed, well before things get tight.
If the group is caught far from any shelter anyway, the current guidance from weather services is clear: keep moving toward a safe place instead of stopping and crouching. For years the famous crouch position, on the balls of your feet, was taught, but the very agencies that recommended it have reversed course, because it barely reduces the risk of a direct strike and it makes people lose precious time. What actually helps is lowering your exposure as you walk: look for the lowest part of the terrain, away from trees, metal, and water.
Spread people out. Keep several meters between one Pathfinder and the next so that a single bolt does not hit the whole group at once. In the open, avoid being the highest point, drop long metal objects, and head toward shelter without breaking into a full sprint and without splitting off from the group. Make it clear to the kids that nothing out there is a shield: the only real safety is inside a solid building or an enclosed vehicle, and that is where everyone needs to go.

The tent does not protect against lightning. The canvas insulates nothing, and the aluminum or fiberglass poles work like small lightning rods planted in the ground of the campsite. Being inside it gives a false sense of security that has already cost lives. If there is an electrical storm with lightning nearby, taking the group out of the tents and into a solid building is the right call.
When there is a masonry building close by, the farm chapel, a hall, the dining shelter, take everyone there. Inside, stay away from windows, faucets, showers, and outlets, because plumbing and wiring can carry the discharge. A bus or van with a metal roof and closed windows also serves as a refuge, as long as no one touches the metal parts. Count heads at the entrance and at the exit.
If there is no structure at all and the only option is to stay near the tents, tell each Counselor to keep their Unit grouped in a low spot, away from trees, the flagpole, and the pioneering builds, with some insulation underneath, like a sleeping pad or a backpack with no metal. Keep the kids calm with a short prayer or a quiet song. Group fear settles with present leadership, and a good Counselor makes a difference in those minutes.
First aid: helping a lightning victim
Start by knocking down the biggest myth of all: a person struck by lightning does not stay electrified. The human body does not hold the charge. You can touch the victim immediately, with no risk of a shock. That hesitation of a few seconds, out of fear of touching, has already kept many people from saving a life.
Lightning tends to stop the heart and the breathing. Faced with a victim who has collapsed after the discharge, act fast: check whether they respond and whether they are breathing. If there is no response and no normal breathing, have someone call your local emergency number (in Brazil, SAMU 192) right away and begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), with firm, rapid compressions in the center of the chest. If there is more than one victim, attend first to whoever is motionless and not breathing, because whoever is moaning or moving already has some chance on their own.
With CPR started early, most lightning victims survive, though they may be left with effects on memory, hearing, or sleep. Once the person is stabilized, look for burns on the feet and hands, where the current enters and exits, and protect them from cold and rain while help arrives. Keep this in mind: this is awareness, not a substitute for a first-aid course with an instructor. Every Club is better off with Pathfinders and leaders who are properly trained before the next camp.
The most treacherous moment: before and after the rain
Instinct deceives you. We associate danger with heavy rain, wind, and a black sky at the height of the storm. But lightning does not follow that script. Many of the deadliest strikes happen at the edges of the storm: when it is still arriving, with the sun out and only a few drops falling, and when it seems to have gone, with the sky already clearing.
There is even a popular name for the bolt that falls from a nearly clear sky: the bolt from the blue, able to leave a cloud and hit the ground more than 15 kilometers away from it, far from the visible rain. That is why the phrase that sums it all up is this: if you hear the thunder, the lightning is already close enough to reach you. Do not wait for the first drop to react, and do not relax just because the rain has stopped.
In planning the camp, this changes the routine. Check the forecast the day before and on the day itself. Agree on a clear sound signal, a long whistle or the bell, that means gather now, no arguing. Decide in advance which shelter belongs to each Unit and the path to it. Rehearsing that gathering once, calmly and in sunshine, is worth more than any improvised warning in the middle of the storm.
The thunder and the voice of God
Many ancient cultures treated lightning as punishment or the whim of angry gods. The Bible goes the other way. It looks at the storm and sees the majesty of a God who cares. Psalm 29 describes a whole tempest and repeats, verse after verse, that it is the voice of the Lord: “The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters” (Psalm 29:3, NIV).
The book of Job goes in the same direction. Elihu points to the sky and says: “God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding” (Job 37:5, NIV). Recognizing the greatness of God in the storm walks alongside responsibility: respecting the force He placed in nature and acting with the care He expects from anyone who leads others.
For Adventists, caring for the body and for life is part of faith, because they understand the human being as a precious creation of God. Prudence and trust go together: you do your part, set up the shelter, teach the 30/30 rule, practice CPR, and leave the rest in the hands of the Creator. When the next storm passes over camp and the kids are safe, listening to the thunder from inside a secure place, it will be easier to look up at the sky and say, without fear, that the voice is a familiar one.
