No Wi-Fi, no signal, no battery — and the message still gets through. It looks like magic, but it's technique: long before cell phones existed, people could already talk from miles away using two flags or a flashlight. In the Pathfinder Club — the Adventist Church's program for ages 10 to 15 — these two skills are still alive and still count as requirements: semaphore and Morse code. Mastering both earns points in class, an entire honor, and a lot of respect at camp.

Why learn to send messages without a phone?

Picture the scene: your unit (the small group of 6 to 8 Pathfinders who camp together) is on one side of the river, and the other team is on the far side, too far to shout. Cell phone? No signal. Now what? That's where two codes that Pathfinders have mastered for generations come in: semaphore, which sends messages with flags, and Morse code, which sends messages with light or sound.

And this isn't nostalgic decoration. Communication without technology is an official class requirement in the South American Division material, and it even has its own honor — those topic-based studies that become patches sewn onto the uniform.

It works like a real-life decoding game: whoever knows the code can talk in secret right in front of everyone. And in a real emergency, knowing how to call for help without relying on a battery can make all the difference.

What is semaphore and how does it work?

The official name is semaphore code. Here's how it works: you hold a flag in each hand and extend your arms into combined positions, like the hands of a clock. Each combination of positions forms a letter of the alphabet.

Picture your arms as clock hands: left pointing to 6 o'clock and right to 3 o'clock is one letter; both up high, at 10 and 2, is another. Whoever is far away — ideally with binoculars — jots down letter by letter until the whole word comes together.

The flags need to be easy to spot from far away. In the official honor, they measure 45 × 45 cm and have two predominant colors. The classic tip: choose colors that contrast with the background, because in the middle of the green forest, a green flag simply disappears.

No flag, no problem: the honor's official requirement also accepts a pair of flashlight cones or signal flags made from natural materials. The technique is the same — only the tool changes.

How does Morse code work?

Morse code turns each letter into a sequence of dots (short signals) and dashes (long signals, about three times the length of a dot). You can transmit with whatever you have on hand: a flashlight, a whistle, taps on wood, a mirror reflecting sunlight.

The system is clever: the most-used letters got the shortest codes. E, the frequency champion, is a single dot. Rare letters, like Q, carry long sequences. It's the same logic as a keyboard shortcut: what you use most needs to be fast.

The world's most famous signal came from this: SOS — three short, three long, three short (· · · — — — · · ·). And contrary to legend, the letters don't stand for anything (not even "Save Our Souls"): the sequence was chosen because it's impossible to mistake for anything else, even with static on the radio or dim light.

Who invented semaphore and Morse code?

Semaphore was basically the WhatsApp of 1793. The Frenchman Claude Chappe invented the optical telegraph: towers with giant moving arms, spread from town to town, each one relaying the message from the last. On July 12, 1793, the system passed its first major test, covering 26 km near Paris. The following year, news of a military victory reached the capital in under an hour — on horseback, it would have taken days.

The flag semaphore that Pathfinders practice descends directly from that idea: in the 19th century, navies adapted the tower system into two hand-held flags, and ships began talking to each other from a distance.

Half a century after Chappe, American Samuel Morse and his partner Alfred Vail took it all to the electric wire. On May 24, 1844, Morse sent the first official message of the electric telegraph, from Washington to Baltimore — and the phrase chosen to open the age of telecommunications was a verse from the Bible.

What do the classes and the honor require?

In the club, each year has a class: a booklet of requirements you complete leading up to the Investiture, the ceremony that marks the achievement (the full official list is in grouped classes). Signaling shows up in the advanced classes: the Field and Forest Researcher class asks you to send and receive a message using the semaphore alphabet, Morse code with a flashlight, sign language, or Braille — you choose one of the four options.

The bar rises in Pioneer of New Frontiers: one of the options for a multiple-choice requirement is sending and receiving 35 letters per minute using semaphore or nautical code (other options include presenting Matthew 24 in sign language and preparing Psalm 23 in Braille). Thirty-five letters a minute works out to under two seconds per letter — it only comes with real practice.

And there's an entire honor dedicated to the topic: the Semaphore Code honor, created by the South American Division (the church's headquarters for South America) in 2012, in the Professional Activities category. Requirements include telling the history of the code in a text of at least 300 words, putting together the pair of flags, and transmitting real messages — by day and by night.

How to practice semaphore and Morse at club?

Start small: learn five letters per meeting and build words using only those. Training in pairs is the secret — one transmits, the other writes it down, then you switch. In the honor, the official target is at most 3 seconds per character, with teams spaced 300 to 500 meters apart.

Practice in the dark too: the official requirement calls for transmission at a daytime camp and a nighttime camp. At night, the flashlight takes over — a short flash is a dot, a long flash is a dash. And agree on the control signals beforehand (attention, error, numeral, pause, and end of message), so no one gets lost mid-sentence.
