Think about the last time you drank a glass of water at the Club. That water is not new. It has already been rain in a forest, has already run through a river, has already evaporated from the ocean, and perhaps has already passed through a plant. The planet does not manufacture new water: it uses the same stock, over and over, in a system that never stops.

This system has a scientific name: the hydrological cycle. But it also looks like well-designed engineering. Water rises without a pump, is filtered without a filter, is distributed without a pipe, and returns to its starting point without anyone having to press a button. And the sea, which receives all the world's rivers, never overflows.

In this article you will walk through each stage of this cycle with everyday examples, understand why water neither runs out nor fills up too much, and discover something curious: biblical texts written millennia ago already described this mechanism with a precision that science only confirmed much later.

What the water cycle is (and why it never stops)

The water cycle is the path water takes across the Earth: it leaves the surface, rises to the sky, becomes a cloud, falls as rain and returns to the ground, to the rivers and to the sea. Then it starts again. That is why the system as a whole never runs short of water: nothing is lost, everything circulates.

The total amount of water on the planet has been practically the same for thousands of years. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the mass of water on Earth stays fairly constant over time. What changes is where it is at any given moment: today it may be in the ocean, tomorrow in a cloud, then in a river, then inside you.

Think about the Club. Nobody manufactures new air to breathe; the same air circulates. It is similar with water. The glass you drank today contains molecules that have already passed through ancient oceans, through storms that fell on the other side of the world, through rivers you have never seen. It is the same stock, reused without stopping.

This changes how we look at waste. Water does not disappear when you dirty it, it just becomes harder and more expensive to treat. Taking care of clean water means taking care of the part of the cycle that reaches you fit to drink.

Stages 1 and 2: evaporation and the hidden water of plants

It all begins with the Sun. It heats the surface of oceans, rivers and lakes, and the liquid water turns into invisible vapor that rises into the atmosphere. This is evaporation. You have seen it happen: the puddle in the Club yard disappears after a sunny day, and nobody swept the water away. It rose.

But the oceans are not the only source. Plants also send water to the sky, in a process called transpiration. The root pulls water from the soil, it rises through the stem and leaves through the leaves as vapor. According to the USGS, in most plants about 99% of the absorbed water does not stay in the plant: it returns to the atmosphere through transpiration.

Putting the two together, scientists use the word evapotranspiration. And the role of plants is enormous: a large forest returns a gigantic amount of moisture to the air every day, helping to form the rains of entire regions. That is why excessive deforestation can dry out the climate of a place.

Try the mental test: on a cold morning, you see your own breath turn into a little cloud. That is water vapor that was inside you and met the cold air. The same physics happens on a planetary scale all the time.

Stages 3 and 4: clouds that form and rain that falls

The vapor rises, meets colder air up high and makes the return journey: it turns back into tiny droplets. This is condensation, and it is from this that clouds are born. A cloud is neither smoke nor cotton: it is a mass of water droplets (or ice crystals) so small and light that they stay suspended in the air.

Here a curious engineering detail appears. How does a heavy cloud, full of water, manage to keep floating without dropping all at once? The droplets are so small that the air holds them, and they only fall when they join together and become heavy enough. One of the oldest texts in the Bible comments on exactly this mystery, in Job 26:8 (NIV): "He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight."

When the droplets finally grow heavy, they fall: this is precipitation, in the form of rain, snow or hail. Notice that the water that falls is fresh, not salty, even though much of it came from the salty sea. Evaporation leaves the salt behind. In other words: the cycle has a built-in desalination system, free and worldwide.

At the Club, this is a good moment for a conversation about observation. Before a rain, the wind changes, the smell of the ground changes, the clouds darken and drop lower. Learning to read the sky is an old and useful field skill, especially on campouts.

Stages 5, 6 and 7: infiltration, runoff and the return to the sea

The rain has reached the ground. Now it takes two paths. Part of it penetrates the earth and descends between the layers of soil and rock: this is infiltration. This water fills underground reservoirs called water tables and aquifers, which work like enormous hidden water tanks beneath our feet. It is from there that many wells and springs draw clean water.

The other part does not enter the soil and slides along the surface: this is runoff. This water flows downhill, forms streams, the streams become rivers, and the rivers travel on. The final destination of most of them is the sea. And here is the closing of the cycle: in the ocean, the water is again exposed to the Sun, evaporates once more and starts everything over.

Notice how the soil works as a filter. As it crosses layers of sand and rock, the water leaves behind many impurities, and that is why spring water tends to be so clean. It is a natural treatment system, without electricity, working 24 hours a day.

This return to the sea raises the most famous question about the cycle: if all the rivers run to the sea all the time, why does the ocean not overflow? The answer is in the next section, and it was written on a biblical page long before hydrology existed.

Why the sea neither overflows nor dries up

The math is elegant. On a global scale, the amount of water that evaporates is practically equal to the amount that returns as rain, the USGS reports. In other words: the sea receives rivers without stopping, but it also loses water without stopping through evaporation. In and out in the same measure. That is why the level stays in balance, and the ocean neither fills up too much nor dries out.

Add to this the distribution of the stock: about 97% of all the water on Earth is salt water from the oceans, according to the USGS. The oceans are the planet's great reservoir-lung. It is from there that most of the vapor that becomes rain comes, and it is to there that most of the water ends up returning.

Now read this text carefully, written more than two thousand years ago, in Ecclesiastes 1:7 (NIV): "All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again." The sentence describes the streams flowing to the sea, the sea not filling up, and the water returning to its starting point. It is the description of a closed cycle.

What is striking is the era. Whoever wrote this had no satellite, no laboratory, no explanation of mass evaporation. Even so, they recorded the correct behavior of the system. It is not a scientific manual, it is a wisdom text; but the portrait of the phenomenon matches what science confirmed later.

The Bible and the cycle: three texts that were ahead of their time

Put the pieces of the cycle together and compare them with what some ancient biblical texts already said. It is not a single isolated verse: they are descriptions that, added together, assemble the whole mechanism.

About rain being born from vapor that rises and then falls, Job 36:27-28 (NIV) says: "He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams; the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind." Note the sequence: the water is drawn upward, becomes vapor, is distilled and returned as rain. It is evaporation and precipitation, described in the right order.

About the water that descends, feeds the springs and waters the whole land, Psalm 104:10-13 (NIV) sings: "He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains... He waters the mountains from his upper chambers; the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work." The springs (water tables) appear, the runoff between the mountains, and the rain watering the heights. And Job 26:8, already quoted, explains the cloud that holds the water without bursting.

For Pathfinders, the point is not to turn the Bible into a science book, it was not written for that. The point is to notice the harmony: the same system that the satellite photographs today already appeared described in a time without technology. For those who believe, this points to an Author behind the engineering. Each person is free to draw their own conclusion.

Club experiment: make a mini water cycle

You can watch the whole cycle happen inside a bowl, in about an hour of sun. It is safe, cheap and works great at a Unit meeting. Materials: a large bowl, a small empty cup, clear plastic wrap, a clean pebble and warm water.

Step by step: (1) put about two fingers of warm water in the bottom of the bowl and place the empty cup upright in the center, without letting the water get into it; (2) cover the bowl with the plastic wrap pulled tight, sealing the edges; (3) place the pebble on top of the plastic, right at the point above the cup, forming a slight dip; (4) leave the bowl in the sun. The warm water evaporates (evaporation), the vapor meets the colder plastic and turns into droplets (condensation), the droplets slide down the dip and drip into the cup (precipitation). At the end, you will have clean water in the cup.

Want to prove the cycle's desalination? Dissolve a spoonful of salt in the water in the bowl before starting. The water that drips into the cup will come out fresh: the salt stayed behind, exactly as happens when the salty sea becomes fresh rain. It is one of those moments when the group lets out a genuine "wow."

Counselor tip: turn the experiment into a miniature Honor. Ask each Pathfinder to draw the cycle, point out where in the real world each stage happens and write a sentence about what impressed them most. It closes theory, practice and record in a single activity.

The lesson of provision: a system that cares without stopping

There is a powerful image hidden in the water cycle. It is a system of provision that works all the time, for free, for everyone, without depending on who deserves it or not. The sun lifts the water, the cloud carries it, the rain distributes it, the soil filters and stores it. You do not need to manage any of this: you wake up and the water is there.

For the Club, this is an honest devotional parallel. Just as the cycle takes care of the earth without failing, many Pathfinders find in faith the confidence that there is a greater care sustaining life, even in the parts we do not see, like the water table hidden beneath the ground. It is a conversation that fits well on a campout night, looking up at the sky.

Notice, too, the patience of the system. A drop that seeps in may take years to reappear in a spring. Not all care is fast or visible. This teaches something about waiting, about trusting in what is in process even when it seems nothing is happening. A good cue to talk about constancy, a very Pathfinder virtue.

If your Unit wants to take the reflection into action, it is worth connecting it with community service: protecting springs, not throwing trash into rivers, saving water. Understanding the cycle makes care concrete. You come to see that every liter saved keeps turning in the same system that supplies everyone.
