Look at a world map. Almost everything you see in blue is salt water, and blue beats land by a wide margin: the ocean covers about 71% of the planet's surface. Now comes the part that both frightens and amazes. We know the face of the Moon better than the bottom of our own sea.
This article is a dive. You will start at the sunny surface, where life teems, and descend layer by layer to the freezing, dark abyss, where the pressure would crush an ordinary submarine. Along the way you will find reefs that work like forests, animals that manufacture their own light and the largest creature that ever existed on Earth.
For the Pathfinder, the ocean is not just a science lesson. It is a place of wonder. The Bible says: "There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number, living things both large and small" (Psalm 104:25, NIV). Let's take a close look at these creatures.
So, are there four or five oceans?
Maybe you learned that there are four oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic. The answer has changed. On June 8, 2021, National Geographic cartographers began to officially recognize a fifth: the Southern Ocean, which surrounds Antarctica. It is the first time in a long while that the map of the seas gains a new line.
The curious thing is the reason. The other four oceans are defined by the continents around them. The Southern is different: it is defined by a current, a kind of invisible ring of colder, less salty water that circles the icy continent. In other words, what separates this ocean from the others is not land, it is the movement of the water itself.
This makes for a good conversation in your Unit. If even the number of oceans was still under debate a few years ago, imagine how much in the sea has yet to be discovered. The Pacific alone is the largest of them all: all the continents combined would fit inside it, with room to spare. Start your next meeting by asking the Pathfinders how many oceans there are. The surprised look when you say five is already worth the introduction.
From the sunny surface to the abyss: the zones of the sea
The ocean is not one single thing. It is divided into layers, and each one is practically a world of its own. The top one is the light zone, which goes down to about 200 meters. It is where the sun reaches, where microscopic plants photosynthesize and where most of the animals you know live: sharks, turtles, glittering schools of fish.
Below it the twilight begins. Between 200 and 1,000 meters the light fades until it becomes an almost black blue. Deeper still, from 1,000 meters on, it is total darkness, forever. Sun never reaches there. The water is freezing and the pressure is brutal, because all the weight of the water above pushes down. Even so, there is life.
And how deep does that go? The deepest known point is in the Mariana Trench, in the Pacific, at a place called Challenger Deep: nearly 11,000 meters below the surface. To give you an idea, if you dropped Mount Everest in there, the peak would still be covered by more than two kilometers of water. The question God asked Job is still current: 'Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?' (Job 38:16, NIV). The honest answer, to this day, is almost always no.
Coral reefs: the forests of the sea
In the light zone one of the planet's greatest spectacles takes place: coral reefs. At first glance coral looks like colored rock. It is not. Each structure is made by thousands of tiny animals that live together and build a hard skeleton, layer upon layer, over centuries. It is collective construction, and the result is a living city.
Why are reefs called forests of the sea? Because, just as a forest shelters a great many creatures, the reef is home and nursery to a huge slice of marine life. Fish, octopuses, turtles, shrimp, moray eels: all find food and shelter there. The Great Barrier Reef, in Australia, is the largest living structure on Earth and can be seen from space.
Here comes a warning. Coral is sensitive. When the water gets too warm, it expels the algae that give it color and food, turns white and may die. This is called bleaching. This connects the subject directly to the stewardship of Creation: caring for the climate and the water is not a distant matter, it is what keeps these forests alive. Descend again, to where the sun does not reach. You would expect absolute darkness and nothing else. But the abyss blinks. A good share of the deep-sea animals manufacture their own light, a phenomenon called bioluminescence. It is not reflection or heat: it is cold light, produced by chemical reactions inside the creature's own body.
What is it for? For everything. Some fish light up a glowing lure in front of their mouth to attract curious prey. Others blink to find a mate in the darkness. Certain squid release a cloud of light to confuse a predator and escape, the same way others release ink. In the deep sea, knowing how to control light is a matter of life or death.
And it is not rare. Scientists' estimates indicate that most of the animals living in the open, deep ocean produce some kind of light. In other words, the darkest place on the planet is actually full of small living stars. It is hard to look at this and not remember the One who 'created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing' (Genesis 1:21, NIV), each with its own way of surviving.
Giants: the blue whale and other colossi
If the depths hold tiny animals that glow, the surface holds the opposite: giants. The blue whale is the largest animal that ever lived on Earth, bigger even than the largest known dinosaurs. It can exceed 25 meters in length, more than a bus and a half, and weigh more than 100 tons. Its heart alone is the size of a small car.
The detail that surprises Pathfinders is the diet. This colossus feeds on krill, little shrimp of a few centimeters. The whale swallows tons of water, filters it and keeps the tiny creatures. The largest animal in the world lives on eating the smallest ones, by the millions. It is a lesson in humility served up by nature.
Whales are also travelers and communicators. The song of some species travels for kilometers underwater. They migrate between cold waters, where they eat, and warm waters, where they have their young. The Bible mentions these giants right in the first chapter, when God blesses the life of the sea and says 'fill the water in the seas' (Genesis 1:22, NIV). Whales are living proof that this blessing took hold.
The planet's invisible engine: climate, water and oxygen
Here is the fact that almost no one knows and that changes the way you look at the sea. According to NOAA, the United States' oceanic and atmospheric agency, at least half of all the oxygen produced on Earth comes from the ocean, not from the forests. For every two breaths you take, roughly one is a gift from the sea. The one doing this work is phytoplankton, plants so small that a teaspoon of seawater can hold a million of them.
The ocean is also the great regulator of climate. It absorbs heat and carbon dioxide and distributes temperature across the planet through gigantic currents, like conveyor belts of water that link the poles to the equator. Without this engine, many regions would be too cold or too hot to live in. And it is the sea that feeds the water cycle: the sun evaporates the salt water, it becomes a cloud, falls as fresh rain over the land and returns through the rivers to the ocean.
Notice the chain. The ocean gives you air, gives you rain and holds the climate steady. It is no exaggeration to say that life on dry land depends on what happens in the water. 'How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all' (Psalm 104:24, NIV). A system so finely tuned is, at the very least, an invitation to admire the Author.
Stewardship: the sea asks for care, and you can help
All this wonder is under pressure, and the cause is human. Every year, millions of tons of plastic reach the oceans. Bags, bottles and packaging break into little pieces that fish, turtles and birds mistake for food. Much of this floating trash started on dry land, far from the beach, carried by the wind and the rivers. In other words: what you throw on the ground in your city can end up in a turtle's belly.
The good news is that action is possible, and the Club is the ideal place. Reducing disposable plastic at meetings and camps, sorting the trash properly, organizing a cleanup effort at a river, beach or park: these are simple actions with real effect. Community service and care for Creation go together, and your group can turn this into a Unit project. If you want to structure it better, it is worth getting to know community service in the Club.
For the Christian, this has a name: stewardship. God handed Creation to human beings to care for, not to destroy. Caring for the sea is a concrete way of respecting the One who made it. And if your Club goes near the water in some activity, join ecological care with care for life: always review the rules of water safety before any dive or paddle. Admiring the ocean and protecting it are the same mission.
