Who was Haroldo Fuckner

Haroldo Fuckner is remembered for a single, defining role in the movement's history: he was the first director of Vigilantes Pathfinder Club, in Lageado Baixo, in the municipality of Guabiruba, Santa Catarina. According to the official Pathfinders website, this was the first club, and Fuckner its first director.

Sources refer to him as Haroldo Fuckner — the form used by the official website. Community records also give the full name Osvaldo Haroldo Fuckner, though that form doesn't appear in official documentation.

Beyond leading this pioneering club, the sources consulted record no biography, profession, or other activities for Fuckner. His birth and death dates are unknown: it is known only that he was still alive on April 22, 2000, when he signed the minutes recognizing the club's founding.

Vigilantes Club and its pioneering status

Vigilantes Club grew out of the work of Pastor Henry R. Feyerabend, who came from Canada to Santa Catarina as a missionary in 1958. Between early 1959 and 1960, he founded seven clubs — Vigilantes being the first of them.

There is a discrepancy in the dates between sources: the official website places the start in 1959, while the official club registry records the founding on April 28, 1960, under the South Santa Catarina Association. For that reason, it's common to speak of "around 1959-1960."

A note of historical honesty is important here: Lageado Baixo's pioneering status is the predominant tradition, but it is not beyond dispute. Feyerabend himself stated that he always understood the first club in Brazil was founded there, but admitted he had no proof or certainty, since there is no record of the club's organization — the history was reconstructed from memories. The official website also cites another pioneering club from 1959, Pioneiros, of Ribeirão Preto (SP).

The 2000 recognition and remembrance

Since there was no contemporary documentation of the club's organization, an important episode took place on April 22, 2000: the surviving members of the first club gathered to formally recognize the founding of Vigilantes, and Fuckner was present, signing the minutes.

That gesture helped preserve the memory of this pioneering effort, even in the absence of records from the time. It is thanks to these testimonies and reconstructions — gathered, among others, by the Adventist Journal of the Santa Catarina Association — that Haroldo Fuckner's name remains linked to the origins of the Pathfinders in Brazil.
