Every crew learns this the hard way: camp was perfect until the rain arrived, and now the box of matches gets three tries and nothing. The wood is right there, stacked, and it won't catch. The rushed conclusion is that "you can't make fire in the rain". You can.

The mistake is almost always the same. We look for dry wood where it no longer is — on the surface, on the outside, on the ground. And dry wood, on a rainy day, is almost never on the outside. It's inside the branch, protected by its own bark. The job isn't to find ready-made dry wood: it's to reach the dry core and turn it into something a small flame can grab onto.

This guide is the step-by-step of that adverse scenario — rain and damp —, not the clear-sky campfire. Each stage comes in the order you'll do it in the field. Why does the rain put out the fire, anyway?

It's worth understanding the enemy before fighting it. Fire needs three things at the same time: dry fuel, heat and air. Rain attacks the first two at once.

The water on the surface of the wood doesn't just wet it — it also steals heat. Every drop that evaporates carries off energy that should be raising the wood's temperature to the ignition point. As long as there's water left to boil off, the wood goes no further: it hisses, gives off steam and won't light. That's why a big flame thrown onto soaked wood dies in seconds, but a small, well-fed, protected flame manages to dry and light it sliver by sliver.

From that come the three principles that govern everything that follows. One: don't fight the surface water — go find the wood that never got wet, the core. Two: concentrate the heat on a single point, with thin material that catches fast, instead of spreading it across thick logs. Three: protect the flame from wind and rain while it's still fragile. Whoever keeps these three, lights the fire. Whoever forgets one, is left with the hiss.

Where do you find dry wood when everything is wet?

First rule, and the one that changes the game most: don't take wood from the ground. What has fallen on the soil has already soaked up moisture for hours, from below, even if it looks dry on top. The wood you want is up in the air.

Look for dead branches still attached to the tree — the dry ones, leafless, that snap with a clean crack instead of bending. A branch that bends and won't break is still green or damp; one that snaps dry inside is your target. Standing dead shrubs, stumps protected by dense canopy and the underside of thick fallen trunks (where the rain didn't hit) also work.

Found the branch, the trick is to go into it. The bark protected the middle. With a knife and a firm piece of stick as a hammer, you split the branch in half by striking the blade — the technique that outdoors folks call batoning. Split it again, and again, until you have thin slivers. The center of those slivers usually comes out dry to the touch, even after hours of rain. That dry core is your real fuel.

If there are pines nearby, look for the resinous stick — the knot or stump soaked in resin, yellowish and fragrant, that many people call fatwood or pitch pine. The resin is practically waterproof: even wet on the outside, it sheds slivers that catch fire easily and burn for several minutes. It's the best natural ally there is for bad days. A knife scraping that knot already solves a good part of the problem.

How do you prepare the tinder and the shavings?

Now you have slivers of dry core. They're still too thick for a match flame to catch. The job is to increase the exposed surface — the thinner and more "hairy", the easier it lights.

The classic tool is the feather stick, or curled twig. You hold the dry sliver firmly and, with the knife, pull fine shavings downward without letting them fall off — they stay attached at the tip, forming a pompom of wood curls. Each curl is thin enough to light instantly, and all together, still attached to the twig, they sustain the flame until the rest dries. One or two well-made feather sticks are worth more than a handful of tossed twigs.

Add the tinder — the material that catches with the first spark. On a rainy day, you go after what the water didn't reach. The best options the forest offers:

How do you build and protect the first flame?

Everything ready? Before striking the match, build the shelter. A newborn flame in the rain dies for two reasons: a drop that falls on top or a gust of wind. You need to beat both before lighting, not after.

Start with the raised dry base. Never light directly on wet ground — it pulls the heat and gives back moisture. Make a platform: a layer of thicker sticks side by side, or a wide flat stone, or a large piece of bark. The tinder goes on top of that, away from the mud.

Then, the roof. A piece of bark held overhead, a tarp, a stretched rain jacket, the branch of a dense tree, your own body crouched over it — anything that keeps the drop from falling on the flame while it's a baby. Your body, by the way, is the best windbreak there is: kneel with your back to the gust and close the gap with your arms.

The build follows a single law: from small to large, always. The flame catches on the tinder; the tinder lights the feather stick and the thin twigs (thickness of a toothpick, then of a pencil); only when that is burning steadily do you add the finger-sized ones; and only when that layer catches do you put in the wrist-sized ones. Skipping a stage kills the fire — a thick log thrown in too early smothers the flame and steals the heat that was still drying the rest.

A tip on rhythm: have everything cut and sorted into little piles by size before lighting. In the rain you don't have time to go looking for the next twig with the fire already begging for food. Tinder, shavings, thin, medium, thick — five piles, all within reach. And blow gently on the base when the flame hesitates: air is the third ingredient, and a puff at the right moment dries and revives what was about to go out.

With the flame steady, the shape of the pile helps keep the fire alive under the drizzle. Two designs work well, and it's worth knowing both.

The tepee (or pyramid) shape is the most natural to start with: the twigs lean against each other over the tinder, like a hut. The heat rises concentrated up the middle, which dries the next layers fast — perfect for the fragile phase. The downside is that it collapses when the wood burns, so it requires you to keep refueling it.

As soon as the fire takes hold, many switch to the log cabin or lattice shape (the twigs crossed in layers, like a stacked tic-tac-toe). It holds more wood, creates a hot chamber in the center and resists a stubborn rain better, because the embers below stay protected by the structure above. For cooking, it also gives a more stable base.

Here the specific rain rule is just one: keep a reserve of wood drying near the fire. Lean the next twigs beside the flames, not on top; the heat dries them while the current ones burn. That way, when the time comes to refuel, the wood is no longer soaked. It's that cycle — drying alongside, burning in the center — that keeps a campfire lit all night in the rain.

What should you never do to light a fire in the rain?

The rush of a cold dinner and a soaked crew pushes many people toward dangerous shortcuts. Here the line between the skill and the accident is thin, so it's worth being direct about what you don't do.

Never use gasoline, liquid alcohol, kerosene or any fuel to "give it a boost". It's the most common cause of severe burns at camp. The vapor catches fire back toward the container and the hand holding it, in a blast no one controls — and alcohol burns with an almost invisible flame by day. If the fire won't catch, the problem is the preparation of the tinder and the wood, and that's where it's solved, not in the liquid fuel. A candle stub or tinder with petroleum jelly, yes; flammable liquid, never.

The other "nevers" of the rainy day:

  • Never light inside the tent or under a closed awning to escape the rain — the risk of fire and carbon monoxide is real and kills people in their sleep. Fire is outdoors, always.
  • Never make fire under branches loaded with water: the rain pooled in the canopy dumps all at once and puts everything out — or worse, the smoke rises and dries out leaves that can catch.
  • Never leave the campfire alone, not even "just a minute". The wind shifts, an ember flies.
  • Never light a fire if there's a fire ban in the area due to drought or a local rule. Rain now doesn't guarantee wet brush; and a conservation-area rule is to be obeyed.

And the closer every Pathfinder learns early: a fire you light, you put out completely. Soak it with water, stir the embers, soak it again, until you can pass your hand over the ashes without feeling heat. In the rain we get lax about this, thinking "the rain puts it out". It doesn't put out a protected ember beneath a log. You put it out.

How does this count toward the honor?

If your goal is to complete the Campfires and Camp Cooking honor, this skill is a key requirement: demonstrating how to light a campfire on a rainy day (or a snowy one).   • Wet the wood on purpose in training. Leave twigs in the rain the night before and practice finding the dry core. It's a different reality, and it's the one the evaluation requires.
  • Put together a personal fire kit — waterproof matches or a lighter in a sealed bag, cotton tinder with petroleum jelly, a piece of resinous stick. Bringing preparation isn't cheating; it's what the skill teaches.

The mistakes that fail people most: taking wood from the ground, building the pile from thick to thin, forgetting the dry base and lighting directly on the earth, and giving up at the third match for lack of good tinder.
