You arrive at camp and the ground is nothing but rock, roots and mud from yesterday's rain. There isn't a single flat meter to pitch a tent. That is exactly where the hammock shines. It doesn't need ground: it needs two firm trees and a little technique.

But there's a trap. Most Pathfinders try their first night in a hammock, get excited, and wake up shivering in the small hours, even on a warm night. They blame the sleeping bag, blame the hammock, swear they'll never do it again. The problem is neither one. It's physics, and it has a simple solution.

This guide sets up the whole system with you: hammock, rainfly, suspension straps, choosing the trees, the right way to lie down and, above all, how to stay warm. Read it to the end before your first night suspended.

The four parts of a hammock system

Hammock camping is not hanging a porch hammock between two posts. It's a system with pieces that work together. Understanding each one prevents dangerous improvising.

The first piece is the hammock itself: a strong nylon or polyester fabric, made to carry your weight with room to spare. The second is the rainfly, also called a tarp: a waterproof sheet you pitch overhead to protect against rain and dew. The third is the suspension straps, which connect the hammock to the trees; today most people use wide webbing straps with sewn loops. The fourth is the tarp guylines and stakes, which spread the sheet open and fix it to the ground.

Think of it this way: the hammock holds you, the tarp covers you, the straps anchor you and the guylines keep everything taut. Miss one piece and the night turns to misery. Miss the tarp and the first rain soaks you. Miss a good strap and you hurt the tree or fall.

Before you set out, assemble the whole system in the backyard or the Club hall, in daylight. No one should debut the setup in the dark, in the bush, half asleep. The Honor only makes sense once your hands already know every piece.

Choosing and protecting the trees

The hammock depends entirely on the trees. Choose wrong and you fall, or you injure the plant that hosted you. Choose right and you sleep in peace.

Look for two live trees, with a firm, thick trunk, at least a hand-and-a-half wide in diameter each. No dry, dead, hollow or overly leaning tree: it can snap under your weight. Avoid trees with ant nests, termites or dead branches hanging overhead, the infamous branch that could fall on your head. The ideal distance between them is usually four to five meters.

Always protect the bark. Use wide webbing straps, 2.5 cm or more in width. Thin webbing and nylon cord cut the bark like a saw and can strangle the trunk, what's known as girdling, which cuts off the sap and kills the tree. A wide strap spreads the force and is the respectful standard, what the community calls tree-friendly. Many parks require it by rule.

The angle matters. The straps should leave the tree at about 30 degrees from horizontal, not straight nor sagging too loose. That angle gives the right curve for you to lie flat and reduces tension on the fabric. And keep the hammock low: the deepest point, where your hips sit, needs to stop about 45 cm off the ground. The higher it is, the worse the fall.

Step-by-step setup and the useful knots

With the trees chosen, set up in order. First run the straps around both trees, at the right height, roughly at your shoulder line when you're standing. Connect the hammock to each strap by its own system (carabiner, link or knot, depending on the model). Sit carefully in the center before trusting your full weight: test the firmness.

Next pitch the tarp overhead, along the ridgeline that runs above the hammock. Stretch the sheet and fix the ends with the guylines and stakes, keeping it well taut so the rain runs off. Last, adjust the height and angle until the hammock cradles you flat.

Knots make a difference when a ready-made piece is missing. For the tarp ridgeline, the bowline (which forms a fixed loop that doesn't slip) is a classic. The right knot is safety, not decoration. A poorly tied strap that lets go at three in the morning ruins everyone's night. Train with the Counselor until your hands do it on their own, in the dark.

The beginner's mistake: the cold that comes from below

Here is the most important lesson in the article, the one that separates those who love the hammock from those who give up on it. Almost every beginner prepares an excellent sleeping bag, lies down, and wakes up freezing on the back even on a mild night. They think the bag failed. It didn't. It was used in the wrong place.

The warmth of a sleeping bag comes from the air trapped between the fibers, the so-called inflated fill, or loft. That air is warmed by your body and forms an insulating layer. But when you lie down, all your weight crushes the fill under your back and hips. Crushed, it loses the air, loses the loft, and stops insulating. The hammock fabric, pressed right against your back, then conducts the night's cold straight into you. It even has a nickname out there: cold butt syndrome.

The solution doesn't go on the inside, it goes on the outside or underneath. The best is the underquilt: an insulating quilt that hangs beneath the hammock, on the outside. Since no one lies on top of it, the fill stays inflated and creates a bubble of warm air below you. The cheap alternative is the sleeping pad, that foam or mat, placed inside the hammock between you and the fabric; it resists compression better than the bag. Many combine a pad below and a bag on top.

Burn the rule into memory: in a hammock, the cold attacks the back, not the chest. You can be wearing a coat and still shiver if you don't insulate below. Even in the Brazilian summer, a night in the highlands or in the wind calls for bottom insulation. That's the secret that turns the hammock into good sleep.

Lying diagonally and adjusting the tarp

If you lie straight down the middle of the hammock, aligned with its length, the fabric folds you like a banana: your feet rise, your hips sink, your back curves. It's uncomfortable and nobody sleeps well like that. The solution is to lie diagonally.

Shift your body about 30 to 45 degrees relative to the hammock's centerline. Your head sits near one edge and your feet near the opposite edge. In that position the fabric opens up and supports you almost flat, like a slightly curved bed. That's why the hammock needs a deep belly, with that 30-degree angle on the straps: without slack you can't cut across diagonally. Try it in the backyard until you find your spot.

The tarp has two modes. In open mode, you pitch it high and loose, or even fold back the sides, to see the sky, feel the breeze and cut down stuffiness on a dry, warm night. In rain mode, you drop it and stretch it tight over the hammock, covering the whole area and creating an eave that throws the water far. If the sky threatens, always pitch in rain mode from the start: nobody wants to leave a warm hammock to fight the sheet in a storm.

Also adjust the height of the line. A well-stretched ridgeline makes the water run off instead of dripping. And leave an opening for air to circulate, otherwise dew condenses on the inside and soaks everything, without a single drop of rain having fallen.

Safety: height, anchoring and what not to tie to

The hammock is safe when set up with a clear head, and dangerous when improvised. Start with the height. Pitch it low: the deepest point about 45 cm off the ground. A fall from a high hammock, while asleep, onto rock or root, really hurts. Low, you just roll onto the ground and laugh.

Inspect the entire anchoring before trusting your weight. Pull the straps hard, check that the loops are properly threaded, look at whether the carabiner locked, confirm that the tree doesn't creak or give. Do it again if you get out and come back. Never let a small child or several people share the same hammock: it's for one person and has a weight limit.

Pay attention to what's above you. Don't pitch under dry, dead or cracked branches, the ones mountaineers call the widowmaker, because they fall without warning. And there's what you must NOT tie to: no anchoring to fences, light poles, signs, handrails, thin trees that bend, or anything not made to hold a person. If it wobbles, if it's thin, if it's fragile, it won't do.

This is awareness guidance, not a complete course in working at height. Set up under the supervision of an experienced Club leader, respect the manufacturer's weight limit and the site's rules. In any emergency or accident, call your local emergency number (in Brazil, SAMU 192).

Why the hammock wins on difficult ground

Once you master the system, you understand why so many people trade the tent for the hammock in certain places. The biggest advantage is the terrain. On rocky ground, roots, a slope or a bog, where no tent sits flat, the hammock simply ignores the soil. It just wants two trees.

Wet ground is another gain. After rain, the ground turns to mud and water runs under the tent. Suspended, you stay above the puddle, away from the rising damp and the crawling critters. It's lighter to carry in the backpack and, once you have the practice, quick to pitch.

The hammock also protects the place. Since you don't clear or level the ground, the vegetation underneath stays intact. That fits the principle of leaving the least trace, so dear to outdoor life and to the care of the Creation God entrusted to us.

It isn't good for everything: open fields with no trees, regions of strong wind or extreme cold call for another solution. But for forest trails, camping on rough terrain and a warm summer night, the hammock is unbeatable. Master this skill and a world of once-impossible places opens up for your Club.
