Before any instrument, you need to master the four cardinal points: North (N), South (S), East (E), and West (W). East is where the sun rises and West is where it sets, this is humanity's oldest reference point. If you face north, south is behind you, east is to your right, and west is to your left.

Between the cardinal points sit the intercardinal points: northeast (NE), northwest (NW), southeast (SE), and southwest (SW). They make direction more precise, instead of just saying "toward the north," you say "toward the northeast." All of this is laid out on the compass rose, that star-shaped diagram that organizes directions.

The parts of a compass

The compass most used in orienteering is the baseplate compass (transparent base). Knowing its parts is the first step to using it well. The magnetized needle is the heart of the instrument: it spins freely, and its red tip always points to magnetic north. It floats inside the capsule, a small liquid-filled reservoir that steadies the needle so it doesn't keep jittering.

Around the capsule sits the rotating dial (or graduated bezel), marked from 0 to 360 degrees, the so-called "bearing ring." The baseplate is the transparent plate that supports the compass on the map; it usually has a ruler along the edge for measuring distances. The baseplate also has the direction-of-travel arrow (or sighting line), which you point toward where you want to go.

Inside the capsule are two parts that trip a lot of people up, but they're essential: the orienting arrow (a fixed arrow shape, usually red, printed on the bottom of the capsule) and the orienting lines (parallel lines used to align the compass with the lines on the map). The golden rule of compass use is lining up the red needle exactly over the orienting arrow, "putting the needle in the shed," as many people say.

Taking a bearing and following it

A bearing (or heading) is the direction to a point, measured in degrees from 0 to 360 starting from north. The word comes from the Arabic for, fittingly, "direction." North is 0° (or 360°), East is 90°, South is 180°, and West is 270°. Knowing how to take a bearing is what turns a compass from a trinket into a real tool.

To take the bearing of a point you can see (a peak, a tower, a large tree): hold the compass in front of your chest, with the direction-of-travel arrow pointed at the target. Without moving the baseplate, turn the dial until the red needle lines up inside the orienting arrow. The number aligned with the direction-of-travel arrow is your bearing.

To follow a bearing you already know, do the opposite: turn the dial until the desired number lines up with the direction-of-travel arrow, then turn your whole body (keeping the compass steady in front of you) until the red needle sits inside the orienting arrow. The direction-of-travel arrow now points the way. A field tip: pick a clearly visible point in that direction, walk to it, and repeat, that way you walk in a straight line even while dodging obstacles.

Orienting the map and using landmarks

A map only truly helps once it's oriented, that is, once the map's north points to true north on the ground. To do this, lay the map flat, place the edge of the compass along the map's north-south line (with the direction-of-travel arrow pointing to the top), and turn the map together with the compass until the red needle lines up with north. Now what's in front of you on the ground matches what's in front of you on the paper.

With the map oriented, landmarks become your best friends. Look around and pick out standout features, a river, a mountain, a bridge, a crossroads, and find the same ones on the map. When two or more landmarks match the map, you confirm where you are. This technique of cross-checking landmarks is the foundation for not getting lost.

A good habit is to "read the terrain" before you walk: identify where you want to end up, note which landmarks you'll pass along the way, and use them to check your progress. If you expected to cross a stream and it never showed up, that's a sign something went off course, time to stop and re-check, instead of pushing on and compounding the error.

Magnetic declination: the adjustment many people forget

On short routes over familiar ground, this difference is usually small enough to ignore. But in serious navigation over long distances, ignoring it can put you several meters (or more) off your intended point. That's why good maps list the declination for the region, and some more advanced compasses have an adjustment to compensate for it.

For a beginner Pathfinder, the most important thing is knowing declination exists and checking the map for the value in your area before planning a long route. If you're not sure of the exact local declination, look it up from an up-to-date source rather than guessing, a small error in degrees, multiplied over many miles, turns into a large error in position.

GPS basics: a satellite in your pocket

GPS (Global Positioning System) is a network of satellites orbiting Earth that continuously broadcast signals with the satellite's position and the exact time. Your device (or phone) picks up these signals and measures how long each one took to arrive; since the signal travels at the speed of light, that time converts into distance. This method of cross-checking distances to several satellites is called trilateration.

To calculate your position in three dimensions (latitude, longitude, and altitude), the receiver needs at least four satellites at once, three for the coordinates and a fourth to correct the device's clock. That's why GPS works best under open sky: buildings, rock walls, deep valleys, and dense forest canopy can block or bounce signals and hurt accuracy.

GPS is wonderful, but it's not magic: batteries die, screens break, signal disappears. The advice from people who know the outdoors is clear, use GPS as backup, and never rely on it alone. A compass and map don't need batteries, don't freeze up, and work anywhere. A well-rounded Pathfinder knows how to use technology while never being held hostage by it.

Orienteering without a compass: sun and stars

What if you're left without a compass? The sky is the oldest orienteering tool there is. By day, the most reliable method is the shadow-stick method: plant a straight stick in flat ground and mark the tip of its shadow with a small stone. Wait 10 to 15 minutes and mark the new tip of the shadow. The first mark points west and the second points east, this holds true anywhere on Earth. The line between the two marks is an approximate east-west line.

It's worth knowing a difference between the hemispheres: at solar noon, in the Southern Hemisphere (where Brazil is), the sun sits roughly to the north; in the Northern Hemisphere, it sits to the south. And shadows move clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the south. That's why ready-made methods copied from foreign manuals can be confusing, the shadow-stick method above, since it works from the first and second marks, holds in both hemispheres.

At night, in Brazil, the best reference is the Southern Cross. To find south: mentally extend the long axis of the cross (from top to bottom) about four and a half times its length; the point where that line reaches, projected down to the horizon, marks south.
