Every orientation question turns into the same one when the instrument goes missing: which way is north? Without a compass and without GPS, many people freeze. But finding the cardinal points never depended on a device — it depended on knowing how to read the sun by day and the stars by night.

This guide is the opposite of what we teach in how to use a compass and take a bearing. Here you have no instrument in hand. Just a stick, maybe a watch with hands, and the sky.

Each method below comes with the step-by-step, with what it really delivers and with its margin of error — because bad orientation is worse than none. Data and techniques verified on 07/23/2026 in the sources listed at the end, including material from INPE and from the Pathfinders' camping guidance.

Can you really find north without a compass?

You can — and the starting point is the sun, which follows the same path every day: it rises roughly in the east and sets roughly in the west. Keep that "roughly": only at the equinoxes (around March 21 and September 23) does the sun rise exactly in the east. The rest of the year it rises a little to the north or to the south of that point. It's good for a rough idea, not for nailing down a direction.

The quickest trick of the day uses that and your own body. Spread your arms: point your right arm to where the sun rose (east) and your left to where it will set (west). There — you're facing north, with south at your back. It's imprecise, but it settles the "which way do I walk?" on the spot.

For something firmer, there are three real approaches, and that's what this guide details: the shadow of a stick (the most reliable by day), the watch with hands (fast, if you have one) and the stars (the only option at night). Each has its moment and its margin of error.

The golden rule above all: use two methods and compare. If the shadow and the star disagree badly, something is wrong — and it's better to find that out standing still than three kilometers from the tent.

How does the stick shadow method work?

It's the camp instructor's favorite method, and for good reason: it needs only a stick, two pebbles and a bit of patience. And it works anywhere on the planet, in both hemispheres.

Step by step:

  • 1. Plant a straight stick in the ground, on a flat, brush-free spot, so that it casts a sharp shadow.
  • 2. Mark the tip of the shadow with a pebble. That is the west mark.
  • 3. Wait 15 to 30 minutes. The shadow will move, because the sun moves.
  • 4. Mark the new tip of the shadow with another pebble. That is the east mark.
  • 5. Join the two pebbles with a line on the ground: that is your east–west line.
  • 6. Draw a line perpendicular to it. It points north–south.

Why is the first mark always west? Because the shadow moves in the opposite direction to the sun. Since the sun goes from east to west over the day, the tip of the shadow goes from west to east. That's why the rule holds at any time and in any place: first mark to the west, second to the east. There's nothing else to memorize.

A detail that greatly improves accuracy: the closer to solar noon, the faster and shorter the step between marks becomes — the shadow shrinks. If you can, do the test in the morning or late afternoon, when the shadow is longer and the shift is easier to read. And check that the ground really is flat: a shadow on a slope distorts the line.

Can you use a watch as a compass?

You can, if the watch is analog (with hands) and set to the right time. A digital watch or phone won't work for this trick — you need the hands as an angle reference.

In the southern hemisphere, which is ours, the step is this: hold the watch horizontal and point the number 12 toward the sun. Now look at the angle between the 12 and the hour hand (the shorter one). The line that cuts that angle in half — the bisector — points the north–south direction. North is on the side opposite the sun.

Note that it's the reverse of the northern hemisphere, where you point the hour hand at the sun. A lot of material online only teaches the northern-hemisphere version, and so the Pathfinder in the southern hemisphere gets south right while thinking it's north. In the southern hemisphere, whoever points the 12 at the sun doesn't go wrong.

Good news for anyone doing the math: Brazil no longer observes daylight saving time as of 2019, when Decree No. 9,772 ended the practice. So today your watch's time already matches solar time without setting anything back. Before 2019, you had to subtract an hour in the summer months for the method to add up.

Two honest caveats. First: the watch method loses accuracy near the equator and in the middle of the day, when the sun is almost directly overhead — at those hours, prefer the stick shadow. Second: it gives the north–south line, but doesn't tell you by itself which end is north. Combine it with "north is on the side opposite the sun" and check with a second clue.

How does the Southern Cross point south?

At night, in the southern hemisphere, the sky has a compass drawn on it: the Southern Cross. For camping it's worth more as an instrument than as decoration. Don't confuse this orientation section with studying the sky itself — if your interest is getting to know the stars, see the Astronomy honor.

The cross has five stars: the four that form the arms and a smaller one, nicknamed "the Intruder," near the center. The two stars of the more distant arms form the long axis of the cross. At the foot of that axis is Acrux (Alpha Crucis), the brightest one and the one the old navigators called the Star of Magellan. It is Acrux that points the way south.

How to find south in practice:

  • 1. Locate the cross and identify the long axis (the long arm, from the top down to the foot).
  • 2. Extend that axis, starting from the top star, passing through Acrux (the foot) and continuing downward, toward the horizon.
  • 3. Stretch that imaginary line about 4.5 times the length of the long axis.
  • 4. From the point where the line ends, drop a perpendicular line to the horizon. Where it touches the ground is, approximately, geographic south.

Found south? Then you have it all: facing south, north is at your back, east is to your left and west to your right. In much of the southern hemisphere the Southern Cross stays visible all year, though it rises higher and earlier in the sky between autumn and winter. It needs, of course, a clear sky — a cloud or dense forest blocks the reading.

How not to confuse it with the False Cross?

This is the classic mistake, and it sends people off in the wrong direction with all the confidence in the world. In the southern sky there is another group of cross-shaped stars, the False Cross. It is larger, more spread out and dimmer — but, in the dark and in a hurry, it fools you.

The safest way to confirm the true Cross is to look at the two pointer stars beside it: Alpha and Beta Centauri, also called the "guards" of the Cross. They are two bright stars, close together, that point toward the cross. The False Cross has no such pair of guards beside it. If you see the cross and, near it, two strong paired stars, it's the real Southern Cross.

Two more clues to nail it: the true Cross is more compact (the arms closer together) and has that "Intruder," the extra little star near the center that the False Cross lacks. One of the stars of the cross, Gacrux (at the top), leans toward a reddish tone, which helps you spot it at a glance.

Make it a counselor's habit: before pointing out south to the kids, confirm the guards. Getting the constellation wrong means getting every cardinal point wrong at once.

Can you trust moss and signs in nature?

Here you have to be frank, because this is the part most full of folklore. The short answer: signs in nature serve to confirm a direction, never to discover it on their own. Treat them as a second opinion, never as the only one.

The most cited sign is moss. The idea has a real basis: mosses and lichens like shade and moisture, so they tend to grow more on the side that gets less sun — which, in the southern hemisphere, is usually the south-facing side of the trunk. The problem is the word "tend." In dense forest, like the Amazon, the canopy blocks the sun and moss grows all around the whole trunk. Near a river, a rock or a clearing, everything changes. In other words: moss gets it wrong easily.

Other clues run on the same basis and with the same caveats: anthill entrances that tend to avoid the colder face, fuller branches and larger leaves on the side that gets more sun, snow melting first on one slope. They are clues of tendency, not of precision. None of them replaces the stick shadow or the Southern Cross.

The correct use is this: you've already found south by the star, you look at the moss and see it matches — great, one more confirmation. If an isolated sign "says" one thing and the stick says another, the stick wins. Nature confirms; it doesn't decide.

How to practice this at the club?

Orientation without an instrument is one of those skills that only sink in through repetition, and camp is the perfect laboratory. Don't leave it to teach on the day the compass actually goes missing.

A simple plan for a unit afternoon: in the morning, each patrol plants the stick and marks the east–west line; in the afternoon, they redo it and compare with the watch method; at night, everyone finds south by the Southern Cross and checks whether the three readings agree. Close with a good question: "why do they agree (or not)?". That's where the technique turns into understanding.

And a word on safety, worth more than any method. Finding north is half the way; the other half is not getting lost in the first place. Walk in a group, announce the route's direction, carry water and a whistle, and, if you realize you're lost, the right thing is to stop — sit down, calm down and signal — instead of walking off into the dark after a star. No orientation technique replaces the common sense of staying where you're easiest to find.
