At a campout, the phone signal drops before the rain arrives. And then you're left with what Pathfinders have used for generations: the sky. Clouds are the oldest weather bulletin in the world, and it hangs up there all day long, free of charge, for anyone who knows how to look.

The good news is that reading clouds is no meteorologist's gift. There are four basic families, four names you memorize in an afternoon: cirrus, cumulus, stratus and nimbus. Each one has a face and a message. One announces a change for the next day. Another is a sign of settled weather. And one of them, when it grows into a tower, is the most important warning of all: time to protect the group.

This guide combines what the Weather (Climatology) Honor asks for with what you actually need to know under a tent. Each cloud type comes with the weather it usually brings — and with the honest limit of what that reading delivers. You might think the forecast app solved this forever. It did — where there's a signal. Down in the valley, on the trail, at 3 a.m. when the battery died, the only radar available is the one above your head.

Reading clouds doesn't compete with Inmet. It fills the gap: while the official forecast talks about the whole region and the whole day, the cloud talks about your valley in the next few minutes and hours. It's the difference between knowing that "there's a 60% chance of rain in the state today" and seeing the dark tower growing right over your camp. Both pieces of information are useful; the second is the one that makes you take down the tent in time.

There's also the reason that brought you here: reading clouds is a requirement of the Weather (Climatology) Honor, one of the honors in the Nature Study area of the South American Division (DSA) honors program. Identifying cirrus, cumulus, nimbus and stratus — and saying what weather each one announces — is among the items on the card. This guide serves both purposes at once: passing the honor and not getting caught out in the field.

One last reason, less technical: looking at the sky with purpose changes the hike. The Pathfinder who learns to name what they see stops walking with their head down. It's the same discipline of observation that shows up in Astronomy at night — only by day, and with an immediate practical consequence.

The four families: what does each name already give away?

Before the table, the vocabulary. And here's the trick: cloud names are descriptions in Latin. Whoever understands the four roots practically decodes any cloud without memorizing a list.

  • Cirrus (from the Latin cirrus, "lock of hair"): these are the highest clouds in the sky, generally above 6 km, made of ice crystals. Thin, whitish, with the look of a brushstroke or a feather. On their own, they don't rain — but they're usually the first sign that something is on the way.
  • Cumulus (from cumulus, "heap, pile"): the puffy cotton clouds, isolated, with a flat base and a rounded top. They're born from warm air rising. Small and spaced out, they're the signature of a good day.
  • Stratus (from stratus, "layer, sheet"): a cloud spread out like a blanket, low and gray, covering the whole sky with no defined shape. It brings that overcast day, no sun, with fine drizzle.
  • Nimbus (from nimbus, "rain"): this is the root that matters most. Wherever "nimbus" appears, there is real rain. It combines with the others: nimbostratus is the layer loaded with continuous rain; cumulonimbus is the cumulus that turned into a storm tower.

Notice how the system builds itself: a layer cloud that rains is nimbus + stratus = nimbostratus. A cumulus that grew until it became a storm is cumulus + nimbus = cumulonimbus. Memorize the four roots and you read names you never even studied.

Meteorologists still separate clouds by height — high (cirrus), middle (the prefix alto-, as in altostratus) and low (stratus and cumulus) —, but for the field the four families are enough. The honor card asks precisely for these four, not the complete list of the ten genera.

Which cloud announces which weather?

This is the table you carry in your pocket. It crosses each family with the weather it usually brings and with what to do at camp. Read from top to bottom: the further down the table, the more attention the sky is asking for.

A golden rule so you don't misread the cirrus: it isn't the rain, it's the invitation. Cirrus spreading and thickening little by little until they form a milky veil (cirrostratus) usually precede a front with rain within about a day. A lone cirrus in a blue sky, on a dry late afternoon, is often just a cirrus. What matters is the trend: is the sky clearing or is it loading up?

And there's the easiest reading of all, which any kid in the unit gets right: small, spaced-out cumulus in the morning that keep growing and darkening through the afternoon are turning into a storm right before your eyes. That transformation — from puffy cotton to dark tower — is the movie that precedes most summer storms in Brazil.

The nimbus clouds: when is it time to take down the tent?

If you keep a single thing from this guide, keep this: the cumulonimbus is the cloud that changes a camp decision. The others call for a raincoat; this one calls for a plan.

Recognizing it is simple because it's too big to go unnoticed. It's a vertical tower that grows far above the other clouds, with a dark, heavy base and the top flattened into an anvil shape — that "hat" spread out on high is the unmistakable signature. Beneath it comes everything at once: heavy rain, lightning, cold wind gusts that arrive before the water and, frequently in Brazil, hail.

The number one risk under a cumulonimbus isn't getting wet. It's the lightning. And here's a number that saves lives, the 30/30 rule, recommended by weather services:

  • Did you count fewer than 30 seconds between the flash of lightning and the crash of thunder? The storm is less than 10 km away — close enough for the next bolt to strike you. Gather the group into an enclosed shelter.
  • Wait 30 minutes after the last thunderclap before returning to outdoor activities. Most lightning accidents happen at the beginning and end of the storm, when people think it has already passed.

During the storm, the safety guidance is straightforward: get out of open ground, off hilltops and away from the water; move away from isolated trees and from metal fences and posts; and choose an enclosed building or the inside of a hard-topped vehicle. A tent is not a shelter against lightning — the poles and the wet structure don't protect you. This is the kind of decision the club leadership should agree on in the camp plan, with a shelter point defined before the rain begins.

The nimbostratus, cousin of the cumulonimbus, is less dramatic but more stubborn: it has no lightning or anvil, it's just that low, dark layer that rains nonstop for hours. It doesn't demand evacuation, but it turns a camp into a mud pit. Against it, the defense is logistical — a trench around the tent, gear lifted off the ground, dry clothes kept in a plastic bag.

How does reading clouds fit into the Weather (Climatology) Honor?

The Weather (Climatology) Honor is where this skill becomes a record on the Pathfinder's card. It belongs to the Nature Study area of the DSA honors program, and reading clouds is just one of its requirements — the honor also covers weather instruments, the water cycle, the formation of rain and frost, and the use of radar and satellites in weather forecasting.

On the cloud requirement, an editorial piece of advice, without handing over ready-made answers: the card asks you to identify the four types in the sky or in photographs and say the weather associated with each one. Whoever only memorizes the definition barely passes; whoever goes out into the field and photographs their own clouds over a few weeks truly understands — and also puts together far better presentation material.

Two tips from someone who instructs the honor:

  • Build a sky notebook. A classic climatology requirement is to keep a weather record over several days. Combine that with the clouds: at each observation, note the date, photograph the sky and write down what weather you predicted and what actually happened. That notebook solves two requirements at once and proves you observed, you didn't copy.
  • Don't confuse a fancy name with a correct answer. The most common mistake in the evaluation is the Pathfinder blurting out "cirrocumulus altostratus" to impress and getting the basic family wrong. The instructor wants to see you confidently distinguish the four roots — cirrus, cumulus, stratus, nimbus — before the compound names.

Whoever evaluates and signs off the requirement is the honor instructor within the club or a designated counselor, following the official requirements published by the DSA. How do you set up your sky observation in the field?

Reading clouds improves with method. It's not looking up once and guessing — it's tracking the change. Here's a simple routine that serves both the honor and the unit's safety.

Observe three times a day. In the morning, in mid-afternoon and before the end of the day. What matters isn't the snapshot of a moment, but the before and after: are the clouds rising or falling? Getting whiter or darker? Spreading out or piling up? A sky that loads up through the day is a sky that's going to close in.

Combine the sky with the wind and the air. A cloud doesn't act alone. Wind that changes direction and suddenly cools, air that turns muggy and heavy on an afternoon of growing cumulus, the smell of wet earth before the rain — all of that confirms what the cloud suggests. The experienced Pathfinder reads the whole picture, not one isolated sign.

Note it down and check. This is the step that separates those who learn from those who just watch. Record the forecast you made and come back the next day to see if you got it right. Getting it wrong and understanding why teaches more than ten memorized tables. It's also exactly the weekly record the honor asks for.

Teach the unit. Turn the reading into a game: each Pathfinder points to a cloud and risks a forecast; at night, you check who got it right. Besides cementing the content, it creates the collective habit of looking at the sky — and at a campout, the more trained eyes, the sooner someone spots the anvil tower growing on the horizon.

How far can you trust the cloud — and where can't you?

It has to be said outright, because safety depends on it: reading clouds is a short-term trend reading, not an exact forecast. It gets "it's going to load up in the next few hours" right and gets "it's going to rain at 3:20 p.m." badly wrong. Knowing what it delivers, you use it properly.

Think of reliability in three layers:

1. What the cloud actually says. A trend for the next few hours, in the exact place where you are. A cumulonimbus growing in the afternoon is one of the most reliable signs there is — it's a storm forming in plain sight. A cirrus announcing a change for the next day is reliable as a direction, not as a time.

2. What varies and who confirms. The same cloud behaves differently depending on the terrain, the season and the region. Mountain rain, sea breeze and summer storms have their own patterns that the local club knows better than any table. That's why the final field decision — climbing the trail, entering the river, going ahead with the activity — belongs to the club leadership, cross-checking what the sky shows with the official bulletin and with the experience of those who've already camped in that place.

3. The principle that settles it. Cloud and official bulletin don't compete, they add up. The Inmet app or a reliable service gives you the general picture of the day; the sky gives you the last-minute local warning. In the face of any sign of a storm, the safest decision always wins — take down, take shelter, wait. No camp activity is worth a lightning risk, and no cloud reading, however good, replaces the common sense of protecting the group first.
