Imagine leaving the Amazon, with its heat, humidity and trees that vanish into the sky, and arriving in the Arctic tundra, where the ground stays frozen almost the whole year and no tree can grow. They are two worlds on the same planet. That is what scientists call a biome: large regions of the Earth with similar climate, similar plants and similar animals.
You don't have to travel to the other side of the world to see this in action. The biome where your Club camps has its own rules: what grows there, which creatures show up, how much it rains. Understanding this changes the way you look at a trail, set up a camp or work on a nature-area Honor.
In this guide you will wander through the great land and aquatic biomes, understand the difference between biome, ecosystem and habitat, and see it all through the lens of creation: a God who filled every corner of the planet with life made to measure for that place.
Biome, ecosystem, habitat: what is the difference?
These three words are always used together and it's easy to mix them up. But they describe different scales — from the largest to the smallest. Keeping this straight helps in every Honor and in every Class requirement that touches the subject.
Biome is the giant scale. It is a large stretch of the planet with the same kind of climate and the same general kind of life. "Rainforest" is a biome. "Desert" is a biome. They appear on several continents at once, wherever the climate repeats itself.
Ecosystem is the middle scale. It is a community of living beings together with the physical environment where they relate to one another: the soil, the water, the air, the light. A lake, a stretch of river, a clearing in the woods — each one is an ecosystem. Many different ecosystems fit inside a single biome.
Habitat is the small scale, a species' address. It is the exact place where a living being lives and finds food, water and shelter. The rotting log where a beetle lives is its habitat. The crown of a tree is a toucan's habitat. In short: the habitat sits inside the ecosystem, which sits inside the biome.
The great land biomes, one by one
Scientists usually group the land into a few great biomes. They arrange themselves roughly in bands: near the Equator it's hot all year; near the poles, cold almost always. Here is the general map:

Notice something curious: a desert can be hot or cold. What defines a desert is not the heat, but the lack of rain. That is why there are frozen deserts, with very little snow falling. And the tundra is the extreme of cold: it is so cold that not even a tree can grow, only low plants that cling to the ground.
Among these great realms, one stands out for its richness. The rainforest occupies a small slice of the Earth's surface, but it is home to most of the world's land species. It is where life crowds together in the most exuberant way.
The aquatic biomes: salt water and fresh water
Most of the Earth is not dry land — it is water. That is why the aquatic biomes are enormous and sometimes forgotten. They divide into two great groups, separated by something simple: salt.
The marine biome is that of the oceans and seas, of salt water. It is the largest biome on the planet by area, covering more than two thirds of the Earth's surface. Within it are very different worlds: the sunlit surface where schools of fish and whales live, the coral reefs full of color, and the dark, frozen depths where creatures live that have never seen the light of the sun. The oceans also produce much of the oxygen you breathe, thanks to microscopic algae.
The freshwater biome is that of rivers, lakes, streams, marshes and swamps. In area it is much smaller, but it is vital: it is where much of the water we drink comes from. It has fish, amphibians, waterbirds, floodplain plants. Many animals move between water and land right at the edge — like frogs, which begin life in the water and later climb out onto the bank.
If your Club has ever camped near a river or reservoir, you were inside a freshwater aquatic biome, perhaps without realizing it. It is a great place to observe how land and water talk to each other. Just always remember the rules of water safety before any activity near a river, lake or sea.

If you could pick just two numbers to predict which biome will appear in a place, you would pick these: how much it rains and how hot or cold it gets. Temperature and rain are the invisible architects of everything.
Near the Equator, the sun beats down strongly all year and evaporation makes it rain a lot. The result: rainforest, hot and humid. A little farther out, the rain concentrates into a single season, and along comes the savanna, with its grass that endures the drought. Where hardly any moisture reaches, a desert forms. Where cold dominates, the vegetation shrinks until it becomes tundra.
Plants obey first. They don't move, so they have to endure the climate of the place just as it is. And it is the vegetation that decides, in practice, which animals can live there — because it defines who eats what and who hides where. That is why biomes usually take the name of the dominant plant: forest, grassland, desert.
There is one important detail: altitude works much like latitude. The higher up the mountain, the colder it gets. That is why, climbing a very high range, you can cross several biomes in a few hours — you leave the hot forest down below and reach a cold, bare summit up top, much like the tundra.
The lens of creation: God filled every corner
For the Pathfinder, biomes are not just geography — they are a silent sermon. The Bible tells that, in the beginning, God commanded the earth itself to produce life: "Then God said, 'Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.' And it was so" (Genesis 1:11, NIV). In the following verses, He fills the sea, the sky and the land with creatures, each one "according to their kinds" (Genesis 1:20-25).
Notice the care. God did not make a single type of environment and leave everything to fend for itself. He filled every corner of the planet with life fitted to that corner: the cactus that stores water in the desert, the polar bear with thick fur on the ice, the tree that stretches its trunk after light in the dense forest. It is a planned abundance, not a hurried accident.
Psalm 104 is practically a tour of the biomes written as praise: it speaks of the mountains, the springs, the trees where the birds make their nests, the vast sea full of creatures. The psalmist sums it all up with wonder: "How many are your works, LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures" (Psalm 104:24, NIV).
Adventists read nature as a second book, one that walks alongside the Bible and points to the same Author. You don't have to agree with everything to feel it on a trail: the variety of life is far too beautiful not to invite a question about who made it. The invitation stands, without imposition.
How to recognize the biome of your region
You can discover which biome you live in without any equipment, just by paying attention. Ask yourself three simple questions on the next Club outing:
1. What is the climate like over the year? Is it always hot? Are there four clearly different seasons? Is there a dry time and a rainy time? The answer already rules out half the biomes. 2. Which plant dominates the landscape? Is it dense forest, open grass with few trees, or dry ground with thorny plants? The prevailing vegetation is the biome's signature. 3. Which animals are common here? The typical creatures confirm the guess.
In Brazil, most Clubs will recognize savanna landscapes (the cerrado), rainforest (Amazon and Atlantic Forest) or grasslands (the pampas of the South). But the logic is the same all over the world: climate + dominant plant + animals = biome. If your Club has members or relatives in other countries, it is worth comparing — it is a conversation that pays off.
A Counselor's tip: ask each Unit to put together a small "biome card" of the region, with the climate, three plants and three animals they observed themselves. It becomes real material, not memorized. And, to round out the outdoor experience, pair it with a night of observing the night sky: the same God of the biomes also filled the heights.
Bringing the biomes to the Club
Good content is what turns into activity. Here are ready-made ideas for the Director or the Counselor to use in a meeting or at a camp, with little preparation.
Biome hunt: on a trail, each Unit notes down everything it sees and classifies it at the end — climate, plants, animals — and argues which biome the group is in. World map of extremes: on a board, mark the largest rainforest, the largest hot desert and the frozen tundra, and talk about how life adapts to each extreme. One verse per biome: challenge the group to find mentions of mountains, seas, deserts and forests in the Bible — Psalm 104 alone is quite a hunt.
If you want to turn this into something more serious, many Honors in the Nature Study area touch directly on the theme of ecology, plants and animals. The biomes are the perfect backdrop for several of them, and they help the Pathfinder see meaning in what once seemed like just "the bush."
In the end, the goal is not to memorize seven biome names for a test. It is to go out with open eyes. When you understand that each region of the planet is a thoughtful design, full of life made to measure, an ordinary trail becomes a visit to God's art gallery — and no one forgets that.
