Every night the moon looks different. One week it is a thin thread of light near the horizon. Two weeks later it is a full, bright disc casting shadows on the ground. Then it disappears entirely. This is neither magic nor coincidence: it is a silent clock that has turned above your head for thousands of years, always to the same rhythm.

If you have ever camped with the Club, you know the moon decides a lot. It tells you whether you will see the trail without a flashlight or trip over the roots. It tells you whether the sky will be covered in stars or washed out with light. Understanding the phases of the moon is not just knowledge for a Specialty test: it is a field tool, and it is an invitation to look up with more attention.

In this guide you will understand the four main phases and the intermediate ones, why the cycle lasts about 29.5 days, why the moon does not shine on its own, and why you always see the same face of it. And you will discover what the Bible says about this light that God set in the sky "to mark seasons, days and years."

Why does the moon shine if it has no fire?

Here is the first surprise: the moon produces no light at all. It is a ball of dark rock, no fire, no lamp, no glow of its own. Everything you see when you look at it is sunlight hitting its surface and coming back to your eyes. The moon works like a giant, dusty mirror in the sky.

This explains a detail that many people never notice: the lit part of the moon always points toward the sun. If you see a waxing crescent moon in the late afternoon, the bright little belly will face the side where the sun has just set. Try it at your next campout. It is a simple way to prove, with your own eyes, where the light comes from.

The moon's surface, in fact, is quite dark, roughly like old asphalt. It reflects only a small fraction of the light it receives. Even so, because it is so close to us and receives the sun's light directly, it is the brightest object in the night. Think about it: a floor of gray rock, with no light of its own, becomes the sky's lantern simply because the sun reaches it.

The four main phases

The phases happen because the moon revolves around the Earth. As it changes position, you come to see more or less of the part lit by the sun. It is not a shadow of the Earth passing over it (that is an eclipse, a rare thing). It is just a matter of angle: which part of the lit half is facing you.

At the new moon, it sits between the Earth and the sun. The lit side has its back to us, so the moon practically disappears from the night sky. It is the darkest phase of the month. About a week later comes the first quarter: you see half of the disc lit, and it appears in the afternoon, setting in the middle of the night.

Another week and the full moon arrives: the Earth sits between the sun and the moon, and you see the whole disc lit. It rises when the sun sets and shines all night long. Finally, the last quarter shows the other lit half and appears in the early morning. After that the moon thins until it disappears, and the cycle starts again at the new moon.

And the intermediate phases?

Between the four main phases there are four transition phases. They are not unimportant "half-phases": they are what you see on most nights of the month, because the moon is always changing a little bit each day.

After the new moon comes the waxing crescent (a thin thread of light that fattens day by day). Between the first quarter and the full moon comes the waxing gibbous (more than half lit, almost full). Past the full moon, it begins to shrink: first the waning gibbous, still fat but shrinking, and finally the waning crescent, the last little thread before it disappears again.

A field trick is to follow the moon over several nights in a row and write down what you see. In the southern hemisphere, the most reliable rule of thumb is the time it appears: a moon visible in the late afternoon and early evening is waxing; a moon that only rises in the early morning is waning. Observing over a few days settles any doubt, because you notice whether the lit part is increasing or decreasing.

Why does the cycle last 29.5 days?

The full cycle of phases, from new moon to the next new moon, lasts on average 29.5 days. This number has a technical name: the synodic month, and it is worth about 29.53 days, according to NASA. That is why calendar months are roughly this long: they were born from ancient peoples' observation of the moon.

Here comes an interesting subtlety. The moon actually completes one orbit around the Earth in about 27.3 days. So why is the cycle of phases longer? Because, while the moon goes around, the Earth itself has moved a stretch along its own orbit around the sun. The moon needs two more days to "catch up" to the correct alignment between sun, Earth and moon and complete the cycle of phases.

For your Club, what matters is the rule of thumb: from one full moon to the next full moon, about 29 or 30 days pass. If you camped on a full moon this month, next month the moon will be full again around the same date. This helps you plan campouts in advance, choosing the moon phase you want for that specific night.

Why do we always see the same face of the moon?

Have you ever noticed that the moon always shows the same pattern? The same dark spots, the same "eyes" and the same "mouth" that some people see as a face. This is not your imagination. The moon really does always show the same face to the Earth, and never the other side.

The reason is a phenomenon called synchronous rotation, or tidal locking. The moon spins on its own axis in exactly the same time it takes to go around the Earth. Because the two rotations are locked together, the same side always faces us. It is as if you walked around a friend while always looking at them: anyone standing outside would only ever see your back.

The other side of the moon is not dark all the time, contrary to what some say: it receives sunlight normally, only we can never see it from here. Humanity only came to know this hidden face when space probes photographed it for the first time. Think about the precision of that arrangement: a perfectly tuned spin, working without fail for thousands of years above your head.

The moon in God's Word

The Bible presents the moon not as a god to be worshiped, as ancient peoples did, but as a work of the Creator with a clear function. In Genesis 1:14, on the fourth day of creation, we read: "Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years" (NIV). Verse 16 continues: "God made two great lights, the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night."

The psalmist repeats this idea with admiration. In Psalm 104:19 it is written: "He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down" (NIV). The passage highlights the seasons: the moon was made to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when it should set. In other words: that 29.5-day clock you learned about here was, in the biblical view, designed on purpose to help humanity measure time.

And there is a verse that sums up the feeling of anyone who stops to look at the sky. David wrote in Psalm 8:3: "When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place" (NIV). Seventh-day Adventists believe that this order and beauty point to a caring Creator. You do not need to share that faith to observe the moon, but it can turn a simple night of camping into a moment of reverence.

How the moon changes your camping night

Now for the practical part, the one every Counselor should know. The moon phase decides what your night in the field will be like, and planning around it makes a real difference to the Club's safety and experience.

On a full moon, the night is surprisingly bright. You can walk the trail, pitch a tent and set up camp almost without a flashlight. The downside is that this same light washes out the faintest stars: the sky is bleached and you see few bright points. It is the worst night of the month for stargazing, but a good night for a safe hike.

On a new moon the opposite happens. The ground gets dark (bring a headlamp and take extra care with roots and steps), but the sky opens into a spectacle. Without the moonlight getting in the way, you see thousands of stars and, in places far from the city, even the milky band of the Milky Way.
