Close your hand. That is roughly the size of your heart. Now think that, from before you were born until the last day of your life, this fist of muscle will never take a break. Not one afternoon. While you read this sentence, it has beaten about ten times, without you giving a single command.

The heart is a pump. But calling it just a pump is like calling the Milky Way "some little lights." It has four chambers, four valves that open and close at exactly the right moment, and an electrical system it generates itself. It beats about 100,000 times a day and pushes blood through a network of vessels that, stretched out, would be nearly 100,000 kilometers long. All of it the size of a fist.

In this article you will understand how this machine really works, why it is an impressive feat of engineering, and why the Bible uses the word "heart" to speak of something even deeper: the center of who you are.

A four-chambered pump: how blood passes through it

Picture the heart divided into four rooms. On top are the two atria (right and left). Below are the two ventricles. The right side and the left side work like two pumps stuck together, each with a different job.

The path goes like this. The blood that has already delivered its oxygen through the body comes back tired, full of carbon dioxide, and reaches the right atrium. It drops into the right ventricle, which pushes it to the lungs. There the blood swaps carbon dioxide for fresh oxygen. It returns to the left atrium, drops into the left ventricle, and that ventricle, the strongest of all, fires the oxygenated blood off to travel through the whole body again. And it starts over.

So that this flow never goes the wrong way, there are four valves: tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral and aortic. They work like one-way doors. That 'lub-dub' sound you hear through a stethoscope is the noise of these valves closing. Think of your Unit walking single file at a campout: each door only lets you pass forward, no one turns back and crashes into the others. It is this discipline that keeps the blood always moving in the right direction.

The electrical motor the heart builds by itself

Here is one of the most impressive parts. Your heart does not wait for the brain to order each beat. It has its own electricity generator, called the sinoatrial node (or SA node), a little group of special cells at the top of the right atrium.

The sinoatrial node fires an electrical pulse, and that pulse spreads through the muscle like a wave, making the chambers contract in the right order: first the atria, then the ventricles. That is why it is called the body's 'natural pacemaker.' According to the British Heart Foundation, it is this system that makes the heart beat in a regular, coordinated rhythm, speeding up when you run and slowing down when you sleep.

Try the test at the next campout. Rest lying down and count your beats for one minute. Then run to a tree and back, and count again. The number goes up on its own, without you asking. No one consciously programmed you for this. The motor came already assembled, calibrated and switched on from the factory.

Pulmonary and systemic circulation: two circuits, one journey

All this work serves one simple purpose: to carry oxygen to every one of your cells and bring the waste back. For that, there are two circuits that complete each other.

The first is pulmonary circulation, the short route: heart → lungs → heart. It is the journey in which the blood drops off carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen. The second is systemic circulation, the long route: heart → whole body → heart. It is the journey that carries oxygen all the way to the tip of your big toe and to the root of your hair.

Think of the two circuits as two routes of an orienteering Honor. The short route restocks the team with supplies; the long route hands those supplies out to every camper. If either one stops, the whole mission stops. Every cell in your body depends on this delivery arriving, beat after beat, without delay.

The numbers that drop your jaw

Let's get to the numbers, all checked against health sources. The heart beats about 100,000 times a day. Over an entire lifetime, that adds up to more than 2.5 billion beats, without a single pause for maintenance.

The network of vessels, if you could stretch all the arteries, veins and capillaries into a single line, would be close to 100,000 kilometers long. That would be more than two laps around the Earth. And much of that network is as thin as a strand of hair, the capillaries, where oxygen finally passes into the cells.

Health sources estimate that, in a single day, the heart moves thousands of liters of blood through the body, somewhere around 7,500 liters in circulation. It is not that you have all that blood, you have about 5 liters, but they pass through the heart again and again, all day long. It is the same water going in circles through plumbing that never shuts off.

Caring for the pump: temperance, not fear

Such a good design deserves a careful owner. And the good news is that caring for your heart, at your age, is much simpler than it seems. It is not about living in fear. It is about habits.

Daily movement counts for a lot: the heart itself is a muscle, and muscle likes to be used. A walk, soccer at the Club meeting, marching in the parade, all of it trains the pump. Sleeping well gives the sinoatrial node the rest it deserves. And what you eat and drink matters: the Temperance Honor teaches exactly why the body works better far from alcohol, cigarettes and excess. It is not an annoying rule, it is engineering respected.

Caring for your heart is not vanity, it is gratitude. You were given a machine that no one can build. Treating it well is a concrete way to say thank you for it.

When the heart stops: why learning CPR matters

Sometimes, through illness or accident, the heart stops pumping. The person collapses, does not respond and does not breathe normally. In those minutes, whoever is nearby becomes the difference between life and death, and a Pathfinder can be that person.

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is pressing on the chest with force and rhythm to keep the blood circulating until help arrives. It is a skill you learn, train and practice, and every Club should offer it. Learn it properly in your Unit and see the step by step in our CPR guide.

From the heart of flesh to the heart of character

Curiously, the Bible almost never uses the word 'heart' to speak of the pump inside your chest. It uses it to speak of the center of who you are: your thoughts, your choices, your character. The physical organ became the best image for the core of a person, because everything depends on it.

That is why Proverbs 4:23 warns: 'Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it' (NIV). Just as you would protect the organ that pumps your blood, the Bible asks you to protect what fills your mind and moves your decisions. What goes in there comes out in your life.

And there is a promise that goes beyond care. In Ezekiel 36:26, God says: 'I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh' (NIV). It is the difference between a hardened heart and a sensitive heart. No surgeon performs that transplant. Seventh-day Adventists believe that only God renews the heart like this, from the inside out, and He offers it to whoever asks, without forcing anyone.
