You are pitching the tent. The sky darkens fast. A huge cloud, tall as a mountain, grows on the horizon. Then comes the flash. You count in your head: one, two, three... and the thunder cracks. That boom you feel in your chest.
Every Pathfinder has lived this scene. And almost everyone has wondered: why do we see the lightning before we hear the thunder? The answer is simple and worth gold at camp. It can, literally, protect your life and that of your Unit.
In this article you will understand how lightning forms, why the light arrives before the sound, how to calculate the distance of the storm and, most importantly, how your Club stays safe when the sky opens up. It is real science, seen through the eyes of someone who also admires the Creator behind it all.
Where lightning comes from: the cloud's electricity factory
Every lightning bolt is born in a specific cloud: the cumulonimbus. You recognize it easily. It is that giant cloud, dark underneath and with a flat top like an anvil, that can rise more than 10 kilometers high. It is a true storm tower.
Inside it there is a violent current of air. Water droplets, ice crystals and small hailstones rise and fall without stopping, bumping into one another. This friction strips away electric charges, the same way you get "electrified" when you rub a balloon on your hair. The light, positive particles rise to the top of the cloud. The heavy, negative ones sink to the base.
The result: the cloud becomes a giant battery. Positive top, negative base. And the ground beneath it also becomes charged in the opposite way. This difference in charge grows and grows, until the air can no longer hold it back. The electricity needs a path. And that is when the show begins.
The stepped leader and the return stroke
Lightning does not come down all at once, even though it looks like it. First a weak, invisible path leaves the cloud, which scientists call the stepped leader. It advances in short hops, in jerks, looking for the easiest path to the ground. That is why lightning has that tree-branch shape, full of forks.
When this leader gets near the ground, the ground responds. From trees, towers, poles and even the tips of your hair, a spark rises to meet it. The instant the two touch, the circuit closes. And then comes the most brilliant part: the return stroke.
It is an enormous electric current that rushes up from the ground to the cloud along the already-opened path, in millionths of a second. That is what you see as the dazzling flash. Curious, isn't it? The most visible part of lightning actually travels from the bottom up. The air in this channel reaches about 30,000 °C, five times hotter than the surface of the Sun.
Why the lightning comes before the thunder
Here is the secret every Pathfinder needs to know. The lightning and the thunder happen at the same instant, in the same place. One does not come before the other up there. The difference is in the speed at which each one reaches you.
The light of the lightning travels at almost 300,000 kilometers per second. For any storm distance, it arrives instantly. The sound of the thunder, on the other hand, travels much slower: about 340 meters per second. That is roughly one kilometer every three seconds. It is the same reason why, in a race, you see the smoke of the starting gun before you hear the bang.
And what is thunder, after all? Remember the 30,000 °C? That absurd heat makes the air around the lightning expand explosively, in the blink of an eye. This explosion of air creates a shock wave, and that is what you hear as the boom. The lightning is the light; the thunder is the sound of the air being torn apart.

Since the light arrives instantly and the sound takes three seconds per kilometer, you have a natural ruler in your pocket. As soon as you see the flash, start counting: "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three..." until you hear the thunder. Then divide the number of seconds by 3. The result is the approximate distance of the storm in kilometers.
Counted 9 seconds? The storm is about 3 kilometers away. Counted 3 seconds? It is very close, around 1 kilometer. If the flash and the boom come almost together, the lightning struck practically overhead. Time to already be in shelter.

Make this an educational game in the Unit. While the rain passes, everyone counts together and compares the numbers. It becomes real learning, and keeps the group calm and busy inside the shelter.
Safety at camp: the 30/30 rule
This is the most serious part of the article, and the one the Counselor can never ignore. Lightning kills, and in Brazil it is one of the leading causes of death by a natural phenomenon. The good news: almost all of these deaths would be preventable with simple rules. The main one is called the 30/30 rule.
The first 30: if the time between the lightning and the thunder is less than 30 seconds (that is, a storm less than 10 km away), stop everything and go to shelter immediately. The second 30: only return to outdoor activities 30 minutes after the last thunder. Many lightning deaths happen after the rain passes, when people go out too soon thinking the danger is over.
Where to take shelter? The best place is a solid building, with real walls and roof. The second-best option is inside a closed car, with a metal roof, windows shut and without touching the metal parts. Warning: the tent is NOT shelter against lightning. It does not protect you from the electricity.
Where NOT to be: the lone tree and the open field
Lightning seeks the highest and easiest path to the ground. That is why two places are especially dangerous, and every Pathfinder needs to remember this: the lone tree and the open field.
Never take shelter under a single tree standing alone in a field. It is the highest point, lightning's favorite target. And when the lightning strikes the tree, the current spreads across the ground around it and can reach whoever is underneath. In an open field or on top of a hill, the tallest thing may be you yourself. Never stand in the middle of nowhere during a storm.
If you are caught far from any shelter, with no option, look for a lower point in the terrain. Move away from water, wire fences, poles and metal objects. Drop backpacks with metal frames. Do not lie down on the ground. The best is to crouch down low, with your feet together, head down and hands on your knees, to reduce contact with the ground. It is a last-resort position, not a comfortable one. The goal is always to reach a real shelter before that.
The sky that speaks: science and wonder
Understanding how lightning works takes away none of its beauty. On the contrary. Knowing that a single bolt is hotter than the surface of the Sun, that millions of them fall on the planet each day, and that each one even helps fertilize the soil, only increases the awe. It is science and wonder at the same time.
Thousands of years ago, a man named Job heard from God a question that science has only now been able to answer: "Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?" (Job 38:35, KJV). At the time, no one knew how to command a lightning bolt. Today we know how it is born, but we still do not know how to create it from nothing. Humility remains the right answer.
The psalmist also looked at the storm and saw greatness: "The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook" (Psalm 77:18, KJV). And Job also acknowledged: "God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend" (Job 37:5, KJV). To the Pathfinders, Christian or not, here is the invitation: look at the sky with respect. It has much to teach. And for those who wish to keep admiring creation, the night sky also holds wonders.
