Have you ever lain on the ground at a campout, looked up at the sky, and felt that little shiver of "how can all of this be so big"? Hold on to that feeling. It is not weakness. It is the beginning of one of the most beautiful questions a human being can ask.
The trouble is that "big" is not enough. The universe is so vast that the numbers lose their meaning if you try to swallow it all at once. The way through is to climb slowly, one step at a time, letting each step settle before the next.
And when you reach the top of that staircase, something curious happens. The vastness does not leave you small and alone. It carries you back to an ancient question, asked by a shepherd three thousand years ago, looking at exactly the same sky you are.
Why climb in steps instead of looking at it all at once
Try this: picture, at the same time, the size of your hand and the size of a continent. Hard, right? Your brain was not built to hold two such different scales together. With the universe it is even worse. If someone throws the final number in your face, it becomes just a pile of zeros with no meaning.
That is why we climb in steps. Each step is a leap in size, and you only set foot on the next one after you have felt the last. It is like getting to know a city: first your street, then the neighborhood, then the whole map. Nobody understands a metropolis by looking only at the satellite photo.
In the Club, this is the same logic as a good Honor: you do not memorize the final answer, you build understanding one step at a time. So take a deep breath. There are four steps. By the end of them, the sky will look different.
Steps 1 and 2: the Earth and the Solar System
Start at home. Earth feels enormous when you travel twelve hours by bus to a Camporee. A plane takes an entire day to cross the planet. For your life, Earth is gigantic, and it is perfectly fine to start here.
Now the first leap. Earth is just one of the planets orbiting the Sun, and it is nowhere near the biggest. The Solar System includes the Sun, eight planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. The distance from Earth to the Sun is so great that light, the fastest thing there is, takes about eight minutes to cover it. In other words: the Sun you see rise left there eight minutes earlier.
Hold on to that detail about the eight minutes. It is the key to the next step. Because if our own star is already eight minutes away at the speed of light, imagine the others. Here, at the edge of the Solar System, we are still in our own backyard. The neighborhood has not even started.
What a light-year is (the question everyone gets wrong)
Before taking the next leap, we need a new ruler. Meters and kilometers no longer work; it would be like measuring the distance between cities using the length of an ant. The ruler of space is called a light-year. And here comes the catch that almost everyone gets wrong: a light-year is not time, it is distance.
A light-year is how far light travels in a whole year. Light is absurdly fast: about 300,000 kilometers per second. In a single second it would circle the Earth more than seven times. Now multiply that speed by every second in a year. The result is a distance so large that we give it this name just to avoid writing kilometers with thirteen zeros behind them.
Do the math with what you already know. The Sun's light arrives in eight minutes. The light of the nearest star after the Sun, called Proxima Centauri, takes more than four years to reach us, about 4.2 light-years. Stop and think: the neighboring star, the closest of them all, and its light travels more than four years before it hits your eye. What you see today left there before your last birthday. That is the ruler. Now we climb.

If the nearest star is already more than four light-years away, imagine a place full of them. That place is the Milky Way, our galaxy. It is the whitish, milky band you can see at a campout far from the city, when the sky is truly dark. That haze is made of stars, so many that they blur into a single smear.
How many stars? More than a hundred billion. Some astronomers estimate far more. A hundred billion. If you tried to count one star per second, without stopping to eat or sleep, it would take more than three thousand years just to count the ones in our own galaxy. And the Sun, that giant star that lights up your entire day, is only one of them. One among a hundred billion, out on some arm, far from the center.
Crossing the Milky Way from end to end at the speed of light would take tens of thousands of years. And here is the part that floors anyone: for a long time, intelligent people thought the Milky Way was the whole universe. That it was everything. They were off by an entire step.
Step 4: billions of galaxies
The last leap is the one that pulls the floor out. The Milky Way, with its hundred billion stars, is not the universe. It is one galaxy among many. When powerful telescopes pointed at a tiny dark, seemingly empty patch of sky, the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length, they found thousands of galaxies inside it. In a patch that looked like nothing.
Add it all up and the observable universe holds billions of galaxies. Each one with billions of stars of its own. It is a star inside a galaxy inside a cluster, in a sum we can write but cannot truly feel. And we still call it the observable universe because it is only the part whose light has had time to reach us. What lies beyond that, we cannot even measure.
We have reached the top of the staircase. From your street to here, each step multiplied the last in an almost violent way. And it is precisely now, at the highest point, that it is worth asking the question we tucked away at the very start. When wonder becomes a doorway to faith
A shepherd wrote, looking at this same sky: "When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them?" (Psalm 8:3-4, NIV). He had no telescope, knew nothing of the billions of galaxies, and even so the vastness led him to the same question that may be running through your head right now.
For those who believe, this vastness is not frightening, it is revealing. "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands" (Psalm 19:1, NIV). And the detail that most amazes is not the size, it is the care within the size: "He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name" (Psalm 147:4, NIV). A hundred billion stars in our galaxy alone, and faith affirms that each one has a name.
Isaiah closes the invitation with a direct challenge: "Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these?" (Isaiah 40:26, NIV). You do not need to have every answer ready today. But wonder is a doorway, and it stands open. If the same Creator of billions of galaxies knows each star by name, Psalm 8 hints at something even more surprising: that He also remembers you, lying on the ground at the campout, looking up.
