Classes and honors come with a card and an instructor's signature. The Pathfinder Excellence Insignia (Insígnia de Excelência, in Portuguese) works differently: it looks at a Pathfinder's whole year, from a spotless uniform to a statement from the parents. It is a distinction of the South American Division (SAD) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, set out in the division's Pathfinder Club Administrative Manual, so the rules below apply to clubs in that division. It also has a rule that surprises many families: the insignia belongs to the club and is collected before each new presentation. With the closing ceremony coming up, this guide explains what the rules say and how to apply them fairly.

What is the Pathfinder Excellence Insignia?

The South American Division's Pathfinder Club Administrative Manual (Manual Administrativo do Clube de Desbravadores), 2020 edition, devotes section 4.7 to the topic. According to the text, in our translation from Portuguese, the insignia was created to "encourage a high standard of conduct and performance of the Pathfinder as an individual, over a period of one year". The key word is individual. Unit scoring rewards the group; here the assessment is personal, name by name.

The program is mandatory: the Manual states that every club must adopt it and that only those who have reached a high standard of efficiency as Pathfinders may receive the insignia. Only Pathfinders take part in the yearly selection, and those who receive it may wear it on the uniform for one year.

The name echoes the club emblem. In section 1.4.3, the Manual explains that the yellow in the emblem stands for excellence, because the Pathfinder Club holds high standards to help build an upright character. The insignia turns that ideal into a concrete goal, checked over twelve months.

What are the criteria for the Pathfinder Excellence Insignia?

Selection follows nine criteria in section 4.7.1 of the Manual. They are the minimum, and the text itself warns that failing to meet any one of them rules out the award. A brilliant year of honors, for example, does not make up for an unfinished class or a missing parents' statement.

Several criteria call for close observation, something only the Counselor and the Instructors can provide. The right-hand column offers a practical tracking suggestion; it is not part of the rules.

Which classes by age must a Pathfinder complete to receive the insignia?

The most objective criterion is also the most demanding: completing, in the current year, the Regular Class and the Advanced Class for their age, with every honor the cards require. The Manual arranges the 12 classes in six pairs, one for each age from 10 to 15.

A 12-year-old Pathfinder, for example, has to finish Explorer and Field and Forest Explorer (Pesquisador and Pesquisador de Campo e Bosque) in the same year. The required honors for each card are in the guide to honors required in each class.

What about someone who joined the club later? The Manual provides Grouped Classes (Classes Agrupadas) for those who started after age 10, but the insignia section does not address that case. When in doubt, the safest path is for the Executive Committee to consult the Regional coordinator or the Conference or Mission before deciding.

Who nominates and who selects the Excellence Insignia recipients?

The decision goes through two tables, and the order matters. First comes the Regular Committee, which brings together the club's whole leadership, including Counselors and Instructors. According to the Manual, only this committee has the authority to nominate names, because it is where Counselors and Instructors sit together and compare what they have seen of each Pathfinder.

Then the Executive Committee, the club's board, steps in. At the end of the year's activities, after hearing the Regular Committee, it reviews every case, checks whether each nominee reached the standard, and decides at which ceremony the insignia will be presented. This process prevents nominations based on one leader's personal favor.

How the two committees work is covered in the guide to the Pathfinder Club leadership committee. To avoid leaving everything to the last week, put the nomination on the calendar in your annual club planning.

When is the Excellence Insignia presented?

The Manual offers two occasions: the closing ceremony for the year's activities or World Pathfinder Day, held on the third Sabbath of September. The Executive Committee chooses, with one condition: the presentation happens only once a year, to make the moment more solemn.

In 2026, World Pathfinder Day fell on September 19. For clubs that did not present the insignia that Sabbath, the moment comes at the closing ceremony, the last official activity of the year. The presentation is listed among the required items of both programs, always with the caveat that it happens in only one of them. The outline for the closing is in the guide to the opening and closing ceremony.

The insignia is presented by the highest-ranking leader or the investiture leader. In the Manual's sample program for the morning of World Pathfinder Day, the presentation comes during the worship service, after the children's worship time and before the special music and the sermon.

Why is the Excellence Insignia collected every year?

This is the least discussed rule. Because the assessment system is yearly, the insignia has an expiration date: according to the Manual, it belongs to the club, and the Pathfinder may wear it for one year. Before the ceremony, the Director collects the insignia from everyone, even those who earned it again, and presents it anew in front of the club.

The reasoning is in the text itself: anyone who does not reach the standard will have to work harder the following year, and that way everyone keeps growing. It works like a championship title that has to be defended every season.

When it is time to collect the insignia, tact from the leadership makes a difference. Explain the rule to families ahead of time and arrange the return at a regular meeting. A Pathfinder who is not nominated again deserves to hear from a leader, in private, what was missing.

On the uniform: section 4.7 of the Manual leaves the way it is worn to the South American Division's Uniform Regulations. In the 2020 edition of those regulations (RUD, p. 43), the insignia is a rectangular piece, metal or embroidered, with a yellow center and, on each edge, three stripes in royal blue, white, and red. It is centered above the left pocket flap of the shirt, blouse, or blazer; anyone who already wears advanced class insignias places it above them. The editions of the regulations are covered in the guide to the Uniform Regulations (RUD).

Who can wear the Excellence Insignia permanently, including club leaders?

Among Pathfinders, there are two routes to permanent use: having received the insignia for more than two years, consecutive or not (simply put, from the third time on), or receiving it in the final year as a Pathfinder. In both cases, the Manual requires that the person's conduct always be in line with the club's ideals and philosophy.

The rule on non-consecutive years is generous. A Pathfinder can receive the insignia at 11, go without it at 12 for not finishing the class, and receive it again at 13 and 14. That makes three years, more than two, and earns the right to permanent use.

For club leaders, the path is different. Adult leaders do not take part in the yearly selection, but the Manual provides that the field (the Conference or Mission) may grant the insignia permanently to members of the club's leadership team with at least five consecutive years of dedication to the movement and conduct consistent with its ideals. The text does not detail the request process, so timing and forms should be confirmed with the Pathfinder coordinator of your Conference or Mission.

How can you apply the Excellence Insignia fairly in your club?

The insignia only motivates when everyone knows the rules from the start of the year. Read the nine criteria at the first meeting and send a copy to families. The Pathfinder Ideals in the third criterion are the same ones the Manual says to recite at every meeting: use them as a concrete yardstick.

Give each Counselor a sheet per Pathfinder with the nine items and ask for an update at the monthly Regular Committee meeting. When nomination time comes, the conversation moves from hunches to records.

Take extra care with the school criterion. The Manual asks for good grades but sets no minimum grade or way to prove them. Handle the subject in a private conversation with the family, never in front of the Unit.

For the Pathfinder, the best motivation is in the Bible. Daniel stood out among the kingdom's officials because, as Daniel 6:3 (NKJV) says, "an excellent spirit was in him". The insignia is only the visible sign of something that has to be in a person's character, and perhaps that is why it goes back to the Director every year.

Tip: build the parents' statement around the three items the Manual mentions (obedience, helpfulness, and participation), with space for comments and the signature of the parent or guardian. Send it with a deadline, along with the closing ceremony notices.
