Have you ever dropped everything to watch the moon turn blood red? Or heard of a day that turned to night for a few minutes? Those are eclipses. And, contrary to what many people believed for centuries, they are not accidents or signs of bad luck. They are shadows. Predictable shadows, calculated years in advance, that happen when the sun, the Earth, and the moon line up in a straight line.
In this guide you will understand the difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse, why they don't happen every month, what the types are, and, most importantly, how to observe without ever putting your eyes at risk. It is content that works for the Astronomy honor, for a night at camp, and for a good conversation around the campfire.

Solar eclipse: the moon covers the sun
Picture three balls in a row: the sun far away, the moon in the middle, and the Earth behind. When the moon passes exactly in front of the sun, it casts a shadow onto the Earth. Anyone standing inside that shadow sees the day grow dark. That is a solar eclipse.
Notice something curious. The sun is enormous, about 400 times larger than the moon. But it is also about 400 times farther away. That is why, in the sky, the two appear almost the same size. It is this coincidence of proportions that lets the tiny moon cover the huge sun completely.
A solar eclipse can only happen at new moon, when the moon is on the same side of the sky as the sun. During a total eclipse, the sky darkens, the temperature drops, the birds fall silent, and you can see the sun's corona, that halo of light around the dark disk. It is one of the most impressive spectacles in nature.
Lunar eclipse and the blood moon
Now flip the row. Sun on one side, Earth in the middle, moon on the other. When the moon enters the shadow that the Earth casts into space, we have a lunar eclipse. It only happens at full moon, when the moon is on the opposite side from the sun.
But why does the moon turn reddish instead of vanishing into the dark? Because the Earth has an atmosphere. The sunlight that grazes past our atmosphere is filtered: the blue tones scatter and get lost, while the red and orange tones manage to bend and reach the moon. It is the same reason the sunset is orange. In other words, the blood moon is bathed in the combined light of all of Earth's sunrises and sunsets at the same time.
Good news for your Club: a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. No filter needed, no special glasses needed. All it takes is a clear sky, a chair, and patience, because it can last more than an hour.
Why isn't there an eclipse every month?
If the moon goes new and full every month, you might expect two eclipses a month, one of each kind. But that is not what happens. In most months, nothing. Why?
The answer lies in a small tilt. The moon's orbit around the Earth is slightly crooked relative to the path the Earth takes around the sun, a tilt of about 5 degrees. It seems like little, but it is enough that, almost always, the moon passes a bit above or a bit below the straight line. The shadow misses the target and there is no eclipse.
An eclipse only happens when the new or full moon coincides with the two points where these two orbits cross, called the nodes. It is like two roads at different heights that only meet at specific points. That is why eclipses come in seasons, a few times a year, and can be calculated centuries in advance. Nothing is left to chance.

Not every eclipse is the same. It depends on how much of the sun or moon is covered, and on the exact distance of the moon on that day, because its orbit is not a perfect circle. Here are the main types in a quick table:

The annular solar eclipse happens because the moon is sometimes at the farthest point of its orbit. On that day it looks smaller in the sky and cannot cover the sun entirely, leaving that famous luminous outline known as the ring of fire. Even so, be careful: an annular eclipse is still the uncovered sun and remains dangerous to the eyes.
How to watch the sun safely
Here is the most important part of this guide, and the rule is hard and without exception: NEVER look directly at the sun. Not during a partial eclipse, not during an annular one, not in those seconds before a total one. Sunlight can burn the retina painlessly and permanently in an instant. Your sight does not hurt at the time, and the damage may only show up later. Ordinary sunglasses, X-ray film, smoked glass, a CD, and water in a bucket DO NOT work and DO NOT protect.
There are two safe methods. The first is to use a solar filter certified to the ISO 12312-2 standard, the so-called eclipse glasses. They are thousands of times darker than ordinary glasses and made exactly for this. Check the printed certification and discard any filter that is scratched, punctured, or crumpled. Telescopes and binoculars only with their own solar filter mounted in front of the lens, never after the glasses.
The second method is the cheapest and the most fun for the Club: pinhole projection. Make a small hole with a pin in a piece of card stock. With your back to the sun, let the light pass through the hole and fall onto a second sheet or the ground. You will see the image of the sun projected, and during the eclipse you will see the disk with the moon's bite taken out. No one looks at the sun; everyone looks at the shadow. A kitchen colander or even the shadow of a tree's leaves creates dozens of these images at the same time.
A perfect activity for the Club
An eclipse is a golden opportunity to bring together science, nature, and teamwork. Start by finding out the date of the next eclipse visible in your region; astronomy sites carry this calendar years in advance. Mark it on the Unit's schedule.
Prepare the materials beforehand. If it is a solar eclipse, get the certified glasses in good time, or build the pinhole projectors at an earlier meeting, one per Pathfinder. If it is lunar, the challenge is different: get to a place with a dark sky, away from the city lights, bring a jacket, and record the moon's color changes in a field notebook.

The sky as God's clock
For those who believe, watching an eclipse is not only science; it is worship. Right at the beginning of the Bible, the heavenly bodies are given a clear function: "And God said, 'Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years'" (Genesis 1:14, NIV). The sun and moon were made, among other things, to mark time. And they mark it with a precision that lets an eclipse be predicted centuries in advance.
That regularity is a testimony. "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands" (Psalm 19:1, NIV). The prophet reinforces the idea of the God who sustains the mechanism: "This is what the Lord says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night" (Jeremiah 31:35, NIV). The order you calculate on paper is the same order that faith calls the faithfulness of the Creator.
The Bible also records a solemn darkening. At the crucifixion of Jesus, the text says: "It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining" (Luke 23:44-45, NIV). It is not presented as an ordinary eclipse, but as a solemn sign surrounding the death of Christ. It is worth reading with respect, without turning every eclipse today into an omen. Adventists believe that the heavens speak of God, but the Christian does not live by superstition: they live looking up with gratitude, curiosity, and care. It is a belief we share with joy, without imposing it on anyone.
